No Website Sound with good WMP sound??

Hello Again Wizards,
A good friend is now unable to hear web-based sounds through her system., e.g. while on Yahoo clicking to view a movie clip, the video is great but with no sound (She has cable modem with a Linksys Wireless Router wired to system) I tried this with both IE6 and Mozilla (not Firefox) with the same result. When in WMP version 11 all sound files work fine.
Specs: Asus P4PE mobo, 512 MB Ram, P4 2.8 cpu, Win XP Pro with SP2, AVG.
I have a free copy of Shavlik's NetChk Protect I could install to check for missing program updates and any spyware, but haven't done so as yet.
The integrated Audio is ADI AD1980 6-channel with the Asus downloaded SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio Driver V5.12.01.3665 for Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP. I reinstalled this driver with no improvement. She did say that when she had the Windows Media Player 9 and 10 installed that "things" did not fully function, then with WMP 11 everything seemed to work until a few weeks ago.
We would certainly value any suggestions for discovering the solution to this quiz.
Many Thanks
Craig

This is Craig again, in My post above for "No Website Sound" I negelected to mention that the WinXP Sound and Audio Device program also has a quirk; checking the Display Volume Icon on the taskbar will not actually display the Volume Icon on the taskbar. Additionally, with Microsofts Play Control (volume) open, there is no controlling of the volume. Thought this aspect may be pertinent to the issue.
Thanks.

Have you updated the soundcard driver lately?
Run a registry repair software? Registry Mechanic is very good. But the trial only allows a certain amount of repairs per scanning. So you may have to scan / repair a lot, if you have'nt done this before. Set RM, to make a system restore point also.

If you have a Creative soundcard? Then also use the Creative software diagnostics there + check speaker settings etc.
