Depends if it's an AGP videocard or PCI E videocard you want?

AGP:

PCI E

The best at the top

Have in mind, providing you have a PCI E system? That it's not a very good move to buy one of the top cards of today. This, as the direct X 10 cards will be out around beginning of next year. And then the DX 9.0 cards of today, will be pretty obsolete.

So by then it could be a good idea, to either get a DX 10 card and Windows Vista. Or wait until todays top cards drops in price after the DX 10 cards is released.

Any of the cards listed above can manage any game at high settings.

What Goranpaa mentioned is the reason I'm buying the other parts for my second machine (5th build) before I get a new vid card. I just hope that they continue coming out with new AGP cards for a while after DX10 compatible cards come out too. My current machine has an Athlon 3800 X2, 2 gig of memory, a 300 gig SATA drive and an 80 gig IDE drive. In spite of the better components I just listed, Windows Vista rates my computer a 2 (out of 5) - probably because of the AGP card.

Unfortunatly, from what I have heard. Both ATI and Nvidia is quitting making AGP cards after they released the DX 10 cards. But they have said so before....At least Nvidia.

For AGP, another good one is the X850PRO.

And the X850XT PE is a good PCIe choice, although you can easily overclock an X850XT.

gecube is a bad brand i got one of there cards and it broke in a few weeks. saphire for ati and evga or leedlech for nvidia

Posted by: matt.modica

Perhaps it was a defect? That card got perfect reviews.

Powercolor for ATI and XFX and BFG for nVidia are also good.

Posted by: goranpaa

Yeah, you must have in mind, that it's massproduced stuff we are dealing with here. And out of thousands of videocards made for ex. It's bound to be some less good ones in the production line. Just look at the customer reviews at newegg. Even the best stuff, get some bad reviews. And that's mostly due to bad luck, getting the rotten egg in the basket.

I think all the talk of DX10 videocard requirements is a bit premature (at least for current PCs) even though I know they're slated to be on the market soon. I currently have four PCs at home (three desktops and a laptop) and there's no way I'm going out and spending a new mortgage on equipping them all with Windows Vista (and any required hardware updates). My guess would be if you have a machine that runs XP well but needs a graphics update I'd go do it as admittedly the price of DX9 cards will come down on release of DX10 stuff but six months later they'll be much harder to find (and more expensive) so you'll have a limited window of opportunity. I'll upgrade to Vista when a) Its proven stable in the real world and b) The prices for the OS and hardware have dropped from their intial artificially high points.

I couldn't agree with you more.

thanks for all the suggestions really helped, but i really dont think il be upgrading to windows vista anytime soon so id say the direct 9.0 is ok, the mobo has a PCI-E so thanks for those suggestions and i just got some money the other day so i could spend about €200-€250 on it

-Thanks

These maybe will be to your liking?

HIS ATI Radeon X1900 GT ICEQ 3 SILENT Heatpipe 256MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-057-HT) Price: £127.99 (£150.39 Including VAT at 17.5%)

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acata...900_Series.html

I wished, The HIS ICEQ version whas out when I bought my X1900GT! HIS have superb cooling. Due to that they use Arctic Coolings VGA cooler as standard cooler for their cards.

Connect3D ATI Radeon X1800 XT 256MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-044-CO)

Price: £119.99 (£140.99 Including VAT at 17.5%)

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acata...800_Series.html

The X1800XT is a monster card! very powerful and with 16 pixel pipes. The more pipes, the better it will handle high quality settings.

EVGA GeForce 7900 GS 256MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-013-EA) Price: £117.99 (£138.64 Including VAT at 17.5%)

Very, very nice Geforce card!

I linked you to Overclockers U.k. too. And hope that the English pound and Euro is'nt that much different in value?

The cards below is from Komplett. i.e.

If you think you can squeese out another 4 euro? Then this is definte the GF card to get:

POINT OF VIEW GeForce 7900GS 256MB, GDDR3, PCI-Express, 450/1320Mhz, 2xDVI € 204.01

A good card for it's price:

Gainward GeForce 7600GT 256MB GDDR3, PCI-Express, "BP7600GT-256-TV-DD € 167.00

best at the top, working its way down. I'm no guru like goranpaa, but i'd be willing to get those for a system I would build myself.

edit: ugh choose goranpaa's cards over these, unless you specifically want from that site you said :P

Posted by: goranpaa

Those cards are good. Just have in mind, that if you're going for a silent videocard? Just remember that you must have very good airflow in your case. And silent, fan less cards is'nt very good overclockers.

The 7600GS is easier to have as silent version, due to, that it have lower clock speed than the 7600GT.

If you go for a X1650 card? then get the HIS version.

Thanks for the kind words Rabidgecko!
Dont know if I deserve "guru" though lol.

Posted by: JohnsO'laid

Thanks goranpaa, i like the cards from the overclockers site but there is a difference in pounds and euro, the best way to estimate is half the pound price and add it back onto the original price to get an estimet in euro.

But i like the look of the X1650 HIS so i think that would be the best bet for me at the moment?

Thanks again

Some more suggestions are always welcome!

Posted by: goranpaa

O.k.

Yeah, The HIS X1650pro is a nice card. It beats the generation older X800XL wich whas considered one of the better cards in the X800 series and X1600XT. So for it's price it's a good card. But if you want more raw power? Then also consider the Gainward 7600GT. But as for silent operation ,better cooling and better performance with Anti Alizing and Anisotrophic filtering enabled. The HIS card is the winner.

Geforce cards is often better producing high framerates than the Radeon counter part. But the Radeon is better performance with higher quality settings. I have seen this in many videocard shootout tests between Geforce and Radeon cards.

HIS X1650Pro ICEQ is Crossfire Ready and supports HDR lighting.
