my laptop computer keeps locking up occasionally. it will freeze, and then the screen will steadily go whiter and whiter. i have recently bought a new AC adapter for it. could that be the problem?

Yeah, your ac adapter could be the issue. I don't really know but check the voltage and wattage to make sure you got it right. There could be an over heating issue.

Won't the battery keep it going? Mine goes into hibernation long before any physical changes take place. If you use Windows XP set the Power Saver up to standby or Hibernate at 10% battery life. At least then you can narrow it down. Sounds like a RAM issue to me. Any BSD freezes or just fade away?

Download MobileMeter.

Post the CPU and hard disk temps.

Assuming that the Athlon 3500+ in your specs is in fact a mobile Athlon chip, then it would be reasonable for that chip to overheat. With laptops, you will start to have issues when the CPU temps go over 65 - 70 degrees. The 50 - 60 degree range is normal, and any temps below 45 degrees means you are in excelent shape.
