Virtual Memory

What would you guys suggest for a standard amount of virtual memory? I have mine set on 2046 mb, but I don't know if that's too high. Any suggestions?

I have mine set to the same amount as the RAM ( 2gig). Not that I think it is really better than more or less Virtual mem. But I have read about and tested some diffent settings for the virtual memory. And this seems to be an o.k. one. I.E the truth is, there's little to no visible gain in fiddeling with the virtual memory. At least when you have 1 gig of RAM or more.

I have my virtual memory set only to 500 MB. Windows doesn't seem to use much, so I set it low to decrease boot time.

With Windows XP, it is recommended that you set your Virtual Memory(Page File) to 150% the amount of RAM you have in your system. As well as store it on a secondary HDD.

For instance, 1GB of RAM....1.5GB Page File. Preferably on a second HDD, if you can.

But as well, like goranpaa said, it doesnt matter really if you have plenty of RAM and never use all of it.

I guess I really don't understand how RAM vs virtual memory works and why. I have monitored this and I have never used more then 57% of "physical" memory yet yhe reports always show Windows used up to 754mb of "Virtual" memory. Why wouldn't it just use available RAM when there's a full GB unused? I have mine set at 2048 to match available. The drives really chatter at times when a RAM eating program is running. Makes me wonder if I'm diminishing their life span.

I have mine set for system controlled, and it doesn't seem to use the virtual memory much at all. Most of the time when I go to check, the system has set it for the same 2 gig I have in physical memory. I rather doubt that it uses any of it all for very long since the most physical memory I've ever seen used is 48%. It might use some, but so quickly I just can't see it. Incidentally, Windows Vista is a bit of a resource hog. It uses 34% of the (2 gigs) memory just sitting there doing nothing but keeping the desktop running.

some games, Americas Army for example, suggest you set the swap file to 3 gigs, believe it or not. What apps/games/ect.. are you running on a daily basis and how many at once?

I just changed my pagefile to my secondary harddrive. So it's now on the non windows harddrive. This is better right? Also, it's recommending 4606mb and I have 2046 as the minimum and 4092 as the max, should I change the max to 4606?

Also, it says it's only currently using 3071mb, should I reduce it so the load time is faster?

Its using 3071 MB? That can't be right. You have 3 GB of RAM. I only have 1 GB and I have never needed more than 500 MB of virtual memory.
