Network Password

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Ok. To me this is kinda weird. I have a network thing going on with my laptop and my desktop running through a router. Well, here is the problem. I can access the desktop from my laptop with no problem. When I try to get into the laptop from the desktop it asks me for a user name and password. First off I know my user name and password to log onto the computer but I have never set a password to anything else on it. So...is there anyway to disable this or maybe find out what user name and password it is wanting. Like I said I have tried the user name and password that I use to log onto the computer and that does not work. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Try disabling the laptop firewall. It doesn't sound like a network issue if you can access one computer from another.

Only disable the firewall to test this out. If it does work, then you need to configure the laptops firewall to allow the desktop to connect.

Yeah I did all. Still nothing.

Try using Administrator for the username & whatever password is setup for that account. I had a similar problem when trying to RDP to my desktop & I couldn't use my normal username & password.
It may just need better rights.

Is there a way for me to find out if I have a different user name and password set up for the administrator account. I went to the user settings in control panels and all that shows up there is my current user name and the guest account. My current user name says that I am the adminstrator. I don't know what to do this has me all confused. Lol.

That shouldn't affect your network seetings. XP Professional has password settings for network setup so not everyone can access the network without auth.. Your personal home network has no such restrictions unless you put them there. If you can access one PC from your network, the network is fine. It has to be specific to the other PC. Something is set to restrict access. Run the setup wizard again with the same disk or flash drive you used making sure you allow "Printer sharing etc" is enabled from the PC you can't access. It has to work if you're not restricting its access with a firewall.

Yeah that still did nothing. I completly re ran the setup and once again I can access the desktop through the laptop but not the other way around. I completly disabled the firewall on both computers and that still did nothing. I have checked everything that I can think of as far as restrictions and I can not find anything. Man this is annoying. I have set up alot of networks the same way I did this one and I have never had this problem.

WOW. You're gonna have to keep me posted on this one. I would have bet money on the firewall. Sorry for wasting your time..

What OS are you using on each computer?

The administrator password is nothing (it has no password) by default. It won't show up in the user accounts or on the welcome screen. Just type "Administrator" (without the quotes) and leafe the password blank.

Ok I am using Windows XP Professional Version 2002 SP2 on both machines. When the password box comes up I tried typing "Administrator" with out the quotations and left the password blank. The box dissappeaars for a second then the following comes up ......

User Name: JASONSLAPTOP\Administrator
Password:

The only thing I typed was the administrator part. The other part in from of that was added my the computer. I have tried typing the only password I have on the computer that I know of and that still does not work. I have tried taking the password off of the computer and that still did nothing. As of right now there is no password on the computer. Not to log on or anything. There is no password on the network right now. I have even tried completely taking off my firewall and once again still nothing. I don't know if this might be causing the problem being that I have had some issues with it before but my firewall and antivirus is the Zone Alarm Security Suite.

Ok well I just answered my own question . The problem was Zone Alarms. When completely turned off I can get into it with no problem. Now this brings on a new question. Does anyone know what part of ZA is causing the issue. I have it running on the desktop and have no problem accessing it from the laptop while ZA is running. When it is running on the laptop I can not access the laptop.

Posted by: eleanorstang

Ok nevermind. This really has me confused but now everything is working fine. Even with ZA running on both computers. Thanks for all the help.

With the part when you enter the username & password, if you had used the name of your desktop where Windows had put your laptop, you may have got in.
ie. desktopname/Administrator
Still at least it is working. Somehow you must have managed to open the right port in Zonealarm.
