The CAS Latency of my RAM?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: matt.modica

I just noticed this.

I have two sticks of DDR400 PC3200 RAM. But they run at DDR333 PC2700 speed because thats what my motherboard takes.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16820145506

Newegg says the CAS Latency is 2.5 (assuming its operating at full 200 MHz speed)

But Everest gives me these timings:
200 MHz: 3.0-3-3-8
166 MHz: 2.5-3-3-7

Corsair's website doesn't help much:

Try the small software "CPU Z". And see if what it say under the tab "memory"
CPU Z is a accurate software. At least it reads my RAM correctly.

http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php.

If you get CAS 3 in CPU Z also? Then your BIOS does'nt read the speed of the RAM correctly . Unfortunatly, I doubt you can adjust that in a lappy bios.

the timings should be marked on the dimms.

I just looked while my computer was running but the sticker was covering the dimms (it looks different than the one in the pic on Newegg), but I will shut it down and take the RAM out.

I took one of the sticks out today, but all it said was the size on each DIMM and the voltage... I will try CPU-Z next time I am in windows. I think I already have it installed.

Do that. Cuz it does'nt matter much what the sticker says. As I said earlier. Bios can miss read the timings. My Corsair XMS is 2-3-3-6 at stock timings ( Even the sticker says that). But my mobo set's it to 3-3-3-6

The timings in my sig, is the lowest timings I can set without instability issues.

And you can trust the timings CPU Z says your sticks are.

question is spd just a comparision of ech stick of ram?

and is 3337 a good overall reading for my memory?
when i click spd on cpu z the first stick is at 2.5 3 3 7
and the second is at 3 3 3 8
what would be a good setting for these 2? or should i leave it alone?
is there freeware out there that makes it easy to change these settings?

oh and my rig is still running strong average temp is at 46 c when running WoW.

Hi!

Do you mean 3-3-3-7?

If that is DDR2 RAM it's pretty good. Or high overclocked DDR ?

But if it's DDR at stock speed? Naah!

You should look under the tab "memory" in CPU Z to get the correct timings for your RAM.

If it's like 2.5-3-3-7? then it could be possible to set them to 2.0-3-3-6 Wich is pretty good.

But when fiddeling with timings. You should download and run Memtest afterwards under 30 minutes at least.

IF you cant boot? clear the CMos jumper.

EDIT: Also check if you have a setting for "Command rate" 1T and 2T?

1T is normally for 1 gig RAM sets. But some 2 Gig sets can run 1T. That improves performance some.

No, its not DDR2. Its DDR400 (200 MHz) RAM running at 166 MHz (well, 184 MHz OCed). I am wondering whether 2.5 as the latency is when its running at 200 MHz or 166 MHz. Unfortunatley I cannot change the timings because my laptop BIOS is rather limited.

It's probably at 200MHz
