(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

i'm not sure if this is software of hardware so i will post it here. My cd rom will not read the cd's. instead, i hear the cdrom start spinning and i go to my computer, but the cd rom drive does not list the cd. If i click on the drive it opens up, but there are no files. I know its not the cd i have tried different ones, and my cd-rw sometimes does this too. Any sugestions?

CD's that i have tried:

burned ones
win 95
win 98
few others

Specs:
Win 98 SE
30 and 60gig hd
lan card
voodoo 3 pci
56x cd-rom
12x8x32 acer cd-rw
Athon 1gig
383megs of ddr ram

First make sure the cd is clean, next make sure you have the correct drivers for the cd player. If after following the above recommendations you continue to experience the same issues it is possible that the CD-ROM drive may be defective. To test this create a bootable floppy diskette with CD-ROM drivers on that diskette and from MS-DOS test the a data CD drive from MS-DOS.

If the drive does successfully detect and read the disc it is likely that there is an issue with the operating system and not a defective drive.

It could be some program has disabled your autorun feature. Sometimes CD's aren't detected right away. With "My computer open, try hitting the F5 key and see if the CD-ROM's detect the CD contents then.

You might also try getting the latest drivers for your chipset. If you have a VIA chipset, grab the latest 4 in 1 drivers from www.viaarena.com If however you have an AMD 761 Northbridge, you only need the IDE Controller driver.

If you're still having trouble, check for an updated ASPI driver from the manufacturer of your CD-RW. If these are only burned CD's you're having trouble reading, this may be why. Also, check for a firmware update for the CD-RW. That may aaddress some burning problems with the CD-RW drive.

Well according to the site u gave me i don't have a via chip set. But then i looked on my motherboard and i saw a chip that had VIA written on it, go figure. I installed the 4-in-1 driver but no luck.

You do not say how old this drive is. If a new drive, the lazer read head is defective. If older drive, it may need cleaning, or the read head is going bad.

You may want to invest in another CDROM

The dirve is one year old. But, its not one drive. Its both the cd-rom drive and the Cd-rw dirive. Plus i can burn cd's with the cd-rw. But then i cann't read them. Other computers can though.

Are you sure that when you burn these cd's that you are finalizing them, or making them readable in normal Cd Roms. If not, then no cd rom except cd burners will be able to read them. Check out your configuration before you burn the next one and make sure that it is finalizing the burnt cd. Just a thought.

Its not a problem with only burned cds. Its ANY CD> it will only read them if i restart my PC with the cd in the drive. Are these setting right? I disabled DMA and diconnect. With no luck.

This is what it looks like when i put a cd in.

The view from "my computer"

Note: i took out my cd-rw for the sake of getting one drive to work. So it does not appear.

Try going to my computer, open the cdrom drive, press F5, close cdrom drive with a cd in it and press F5 again and see if it displays any files then.

You could try to delete the entry for this CDROM in the Device Manager, restart machine and let the windows reinstall it to see if it could help. Just a thought.

Nope, no luck

Sops I believe that cdrom is dead or dying! At this point I would invest in a new cdrom. I'll keep checking around on this. Got me stumped!

Since he said it was both the CD-ROM and CD-RW, I believe it could be a problem with Windows cd handling. It may have got corrupted some how...

On the 98SE cd, there is a file called WIN98_53.cab. Inside there are 3 files that appear to be relevant to Windows cd reading system: cdfs.vxd, cdtsd.vxd, & cdvsd.vxd. I replaced the cdfs.vxd inside my system once because a WinAmp plugin altered it. I have not tried replacing the other two, so be carefull. These files are located in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IOSUBSYS. There is also an additional cdfs.vxd inside C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.

Are both the CD-RW and CD-ROM on the same IDE bus?

Posted by: Sops

Tried total's idea. Didn't work. The files were the same size to begin with. I don't know if they are on the same ide bus. The were set as master and save. The plain cd-rom as master. They were on IDE 2

Ok, if this helps any. It IS NOT THE CD DRIVE. I replaced it with one that i have in another computer. And the new one still does the same darn thing the old one did. So i belive that it is either a software issue or a power issue.

P.S. The old drive worked fine in the other computer
