best AGP upgrade for my rig...

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Sup everyone, I am looking to upgrade my AGP card on the rig in my sig, beings that Im too poor to make the plunge into PCI-E bliss. I use my puter for gaming mostly. Looking to keep it under $200. I noticed my pc lags and boggggss on newer games like Condemned, AA 2.7, and FEAR. Is it even worth upgrading the AGP in my system?

This cards for ex:

ATI 100-435712 Radeon X850PRO 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 VIVO AGP 4X/8X Video Card - Retail

$129.99

SAPPHIRE 100131L BLUE Radeon X800GTO 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 AGP 4X/8X Video Card - Retail

$124.99

Edit. This is nice too :

ATI All-In-Wonder X800 XT Graphics Card $175.65

http://www.photoalley.com/product/EP4999445.htm

The X800XT, have 16 pixel pipelines. The cards above have 12 pipes. The more Pixel pipes, the higher quality settings you will be able to run without problems.

I had a X850 Pro before my X1900GT. And even if that is a pretty powerful card. Especially if you OC it to X850XT PE speeds.

It lagged just a little bit in F.E.A.R. until I got 2 gig of RAM. Both F.E.A.R. And Condemned, eats RAM.

So maybe you also should consider adding a RAM stick too?

All these cards above will be able to play the games you meansioned at high settings.

Ranked like this:

X800XT
6800GS (This is only card of the listed ones that have support for HDR lighting. Games that support HDR: F.E.A.R. Exctraction point (Expansion), Far Cry and Oblivion for ex.)

X850Pro
X800GTO.

The performance is pretty much the same between X850Pro and X800GTO. The GTO is a slightly newer card though.

And if you feel brave about it. Then you can download "ATI Flash" + A X850XT or XT PE Bios, and unlock the extra pipes making the X800GTO into a X850XT or XT PE, with 16 pipes. The Sapphire Blue X800GTO is one of the few X800 cards you can do this to. But it have its obvious risks.

And if you wanna keep the cost down when going to PCI E.

ASROCK, have a PCI E /AGP mobo that makes it possible for you to run your AGP videocard, til you feel you wanna go PCI E all the way. This mobo have got some nice reviews. Just have in mind, that this mobo only can take moderate overclocking if you plan on oc later on.

thanks goranpaa, you never cease to amaze me! I will check those cards you listed in a bit. Question: do you think I will have any major bottleneck issues with a super-duty video card and the system in my sig?

Posted by: goranpaa

Not any mayor bottleneck. Your mobo, is one of the fastest socket A boards there is.
And the XP 3200+ is by no means any snail.
So with one of those cards inside. You should have a pretty nice gaming rig.

Just as I said in my previous ansver. Maybe just add another 512mb RAM stick too. And you get by fine until it's PCI E time.

You're welcome.

Edit. Sorry! I did'nt realize before, that your mobo have 3 RAM slots.

And 2 of them are for dual channel support. What RAM config do you have? is it 2 X 512mb and 1 X 256mb? Or 1 gig + 1 X 256mb?

If it's 1 gig stick + 1 X 256mb? Then get another 1 gig stick later on.

thanks goranpaa, I have 2 x 512mb sticks running in dual channel. Perhaps I can later down the road get 2xgig sticks, but I cant do that right at the moment. the video card upgrade is kinda of a trade for doing some computer work for my wifes boss.

O.k.

When it's time for a RAM upgrade. Take a look at this RAM. G.Skill is both good performance vice and price vice.

But by just getting a good videocard, you will have a nice performance boost.

And if you go AMD socket 939, when it's time for PCI E? Then you can use this RAM in that setup.

Just like to jump in.

For awhile Saphire was making AGP versions X850XT PE cards that actually beat the 7800GS. Newegg stopped selling them, but you might be able to find them on ebay.

Now the best Newegg has for under $200 is the X850Pro (a little better than the 7800GS) which goranpaa has suggested. I would get that, because you can OC it and unlock 4 pipelines to make it like the X850XT PE. Also, the ATI card is 20 MHz faster than the connect3D card at newegg out of the box I believe.
