Take a guess at how this partition got this way. I found it working on a clients computer late this week.

what's going on in this thread?

Hay Guys

Posted by: oderus1671

perhaps deleted a large chunk of data then reinstalled?

Posted by: ianelarazure

It was just after a reinstall. but nothing was deleted.

Taking one more guess, then letting it out.

So far, it was after a fresh install, and it was not a torrent(s), but it is similar to that.

limewire or another p2p? or mp3s of some sort

Posted by: ianelarazure

Nope.

That was a fresh install of XP. And then a Symantec Ghost image file was put on the HDD. As well, they user managed to make their page file quite a bit more than 3x the size of their total RAM. lol

So most of that is just simply two files. Pretty crazy if you ask me.

Yeah it doesn't help that windows makes the page file rediculously large to begin with without it being even bigger. Really, why does anyone need a page file if they have 2 gigs of ram? Sure there might be exceptions, but I doubt anyone needs a Gig+ sized page file.

I do have one game that complains about the page file being disabled, but it's a problem with the game rather than the page file actually being used.

I agree. Microsoft says that the most efficient page file usage is 3x the size of your RAM. So 512MB RAM? 1.5GB Page file. But I agree, if you have more than a gig of RAM, yuo dont need a 3GB page file, it is just unnecessary.

Posted by: TheeMon

what? where the fuvk u get that... page files should be 1.5x your ram... (taken strait from net110- a windows xp class)

Posted by: ianelarazure

Im not at home, but Ill take a pic from my 70-270 book. MCP for Windows XP Pro. Recommended 3x the size of your RAM. Maybe I am not remembering correctly, but Ill check it when I get home and take a pic to be sure.

The people who know what they're talking about are arguing that you shouldn't need such a large page file because you have that much physical memory to be working with in the first place. In other words, Windows requiring the page file to be 1.5x the size of RAM is another reason why it blows.

Posted by: ianelarazure

Found it. No need for a picture. Microsoft does recommend setting your page file usage to 1.5x the size of your RAM. It suggests you never put it over 3x the amount of RAM you have. It was in an old lab of mine. Took forever to find that lab, lol.

It doesn't matter... a 1.5 gig page file is ridiculous if you have a gig of RAM. There's no good justification for paging ALL OF RAM (and then some) to disk in the first place.

Read my signature. I already took and passed the exam. And I already know better, its Microsoft that in my opinion doesnt. I dont disagree that you dont need that much of a page file, I was trying to verify what Microsoft said.

It was not in the book anyway, it was on one of our Chapter Labs. I just simply got what was on the lab confused.

Some people swear by having a x page file unless you have x amount of ram.

in short, nobody knows best. except maybe your mother.

Posted by: pdnielsen

or Bishop's mother?

Posted by: Bishop

my mother died in a house fire.

luckily she had the foresight to invest in a multi million dollar insurance policy.
