Playstation 3 and the campers

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

So yesterday (Wednesday) at about 2:00PM, the local Best Buy got it's first campers. By the time I was done with work, there were almost 40 people in line. The nice thing is that unlike with the 360, the people out there have actually organized themselves and numbered their hands. From what I understand, this morning they were supposed to of released how many we actually have so we don't get too many campers.

It's kinda crazy. I mean, I expected it, but I did not seriously expect that many by yesterday. It's already crowded with a buncha construction going on outside the store. Anyone have some friends that're campin' out?

One friend of mine has 2 or 3 pledges from his frat out there with him, he's makin' the pledges buy him PS3s also, since there's a limit of 1 per customer.

Oh yeah, the local Super Wal-Mart has chairs bolted down outside the doors and will be opening at midnight. They have no rules set up or anything. And they only have 6 systems. So that'll be interesting to hear how it turns out.

holy shit, isnt it cold up there yet? are these people NUTS? Im sorry, but I think I can wait for an item, any item, to be released without camping in front of a store awaiting its release! unless of course its a new liver or spleen or lung that I may need...

Actually, for this time of the year it's not too bad right now. There's not even snow out there.

It's around 40 degrees or so out there. Cold, but some people are running propane heaters in their tents. Haha.

I have never cared about being first to buy anything. Every game system I've ever owned (except the NES I suppose), I've always been about a year behind in purchasing. That painful one year of waiting almost always came with a drastic reduction in price, and a much larger core of quality games on which to spend that saved money. Only a few times did I ever even get a game on the day that it came out (a few FF titles). I suppose there may be some kind of ego-boosting pride that comes with getting a hot item on day 1, but seriously, what's the rush?

Not to mention first gen models will almost invariably be broken in some form or another.

I'd like to have a PS3, it looks pretty cool but I'm not about to spend $500 on it. I'm gonna wait a while for the prices to come down and good games to come out before I really want to splurge on it.

Only until ZOE3 comes out am I not obligated to buy it.

Games, though, I very, very often buy the first day it's released.

Zone of the Enders 2, We Love Katamari, Kingdom Hearts 2, Guitar Hero 2 to name a few... The reason I buy games on release is because I've been anticipating them for a long time and just can't wait any longer.

Consoles are of course much different. The **** are you going to do with a PS3 and no games for it? The launch titles don't even look that good. I suppose most people are going the eBAy route and the last few doing it for the e-***** power-up.

When I was out yesterday there were people all camped outside of target in chairs and crap. I laughed though when I went to Best Buy and ****ers were out there in tents.

I have to go to Best Buy today to pick up A Goofy Movie. Man.

You gotta get in early. Preorder and then sell. It pays for itself.

LOL

The secret to an explosive sell-out is to not produce anything in the first place.

oh, ya there this guy who quit his job to go camping at bestbuy and another guy postponed his wedding to go camping at best buy and then bestbuy kicked them off their property. Why don.t people just pre-order it?

Some people can't wait: Two gunmen stormed an Elk Grove store Thursday morning and made off with four coveted PlayStation 3 video game consoles, a day before they were to go on sale.

PlayStation 3 is the latest ballyhooed techno offering to create campsites at electronics stores. Buyers have been lining up since the beginning of the week to be one of the first owners.

Sales begin today for the 400,000 consoles distributed to North American stores. They'll retail for $499 to $599, but already are selling in advance on eBay for $3,000.

After the Elk Grove heist, police warned retailers in the area -- some of whom hired more security. They also advised the encampments of hopeful purchasers to watch their backs.

At the Best Buy store on Arden Way, John Bennett played dominoes with others waiting in line Thursday night.

"They ain't gonna rob this one," he said when he heard about the Elk Grove caper. "I got two days' pay in this."

The two robbers, wearing ski masks and black jackets and described as 6-foot-3, hit the GameStop on Laguna Boulevard about 10:30 a.m., according to Elk Grove police. They left without injuring customers or employees.

"They wanted the high-end equipment," said Christopher Trim, Elk Grove police spokesman.

The robbers at GameStop also stole several 2005 model Microsoft Xbox 360 game systems. But those are so last year.

Manager Rod Overbo declined to talk about the robbery.

"When you're dealing with high-end products where there's a lot of demand, the concern is individuals will commit crimes to obtain the products," Trim said.

Even before the GameStop robbery, the Best Buy in Elk Grove had hired extra security, said store manager Trevor Fee.

Thirty-nine people lined up outside the store for an inventory of 34 video game consoles. They erected card tables and portable heaters and played games to pass the time.

"There are probably more of us waiting in line than there are gunmen, so I am not too worried," said Sean Minot.

The Natomas man had called area stores and decided his best odds of making a buy were in Elk Grove.

At a Circuit City a few blocks to the west, 13 people were preparing to camp overnight Thursday for the 10 available PlayStation 3 systems.

"We are more worried about people robbing us for our money while we are waiting than we are of being mugged for a PlayStation 3," said Jose Armenta, who lives just north of the Elk Grove city limits.

Armenta, who came with three other friends, hopes to sell his PlayStation for $5,000.

Qaseem Aszila of West Sacramento had been in line at the Best Buy on Arden Way since Wednesday. He displayed some sticks in the back of his truck he would use for protection.

"That (robbery) makes you think. You should be on your toes," he said.

Anyone contemplating selling stolen goods online could have trouble with eBay, said Catherine England, a spokeswoman for the San Jose-based online auction Web site.

Those selling the PlayStation 3 before the Friday launch had to display a picture of a "pre-order receipt," England said.

Sellers also must have made 50 previous sales on eBay with 90 percent positive feedback, she said.

"We've been told by law enforcement that the dumbest place to sell stolen goods is on eBay because you have to have an address, an e-mail address and we take financial information," England said. "It is by no means anonymous."

Trim, the Elk Grove police spokesman, said buyers going to stores should use credit cards instead of cash.

And, if confronted by a determined thief, give it up, he said.

"It's a game," Trim said. "It's a piece of electronics."

LMAo!!!i heard that some guy shot some other guy for his ps3.

Posted by: oderus1671

I'd like to shoot people for camping out in front of Wally world for a PS3 as well.

Posted by: FadedMaster

It's quite insane. It was interesting to have worked today. Although I wasn't around for open, I got to hear all the stories. We also had 2 more come in at noon on a shuttle that were gone right away.

I heard about the BB-shooting, and I didn't hear about the injury at the Wal-Mart here in Wisconsin.

I was still dealing with tons of PS3 related phone calls (that came into Home Theater so I can only imagine how Media dealt).

Hopefully most people were smart enough to get the plans on the PS3s. 'Cause there's already problems with the damn things, so I've read. Apparently they're not completely backward compatible, and just like with the PS2 there's issues with the first-gen player in it (Blueray in this case).

thats nothing. the people at my local walmart were camping out in line since tuesday for the ps3. I hate the latest systemsthat are coming out. whatever happened to the good old days of Ps1 and N64?

Posted by: FadedMaster

Oh, I remember the hype over the N64. It was pretty big. I remember the numerous contests and such that were giving out N64s as prizes and remember the hustle and bustle when it came out. I still play mine, so I know any console I get I will use for a long time, but I'm never getting a console again on release after PS2 screwed me over with the DREs, granted I managed to make mine last 4 years, but still.

there were tents pitched with chairs and tables and everything setup in front of a target not to far away.
