We (a group of friends including myself) are looking to start a website. My friend does some freelance writing, and the other friend is starving artist. And... well, I'm the computer nerd with nothing better to do than dabble with HTML and some graphics (I also do reviews and political rants).
So we're looking to get a domain and some webspace. Where would you recommend we go to get this taken care of? We're looking for a .com/.net address and obviously something with a little bit of space because of the artwork.
Server reliability isn't a huge thing, at least at the start of things. Something that's not down once a week though. We're mostly looking for a deal at the moment. Later, if we start making money and generating traffic, we might transfer to a more reliable server.
But we want something with decent bandwidth and some good space. Something that offers domain registration, and preferably fast. What're your suggestions?
EDIT:
What do you think of http://www.hostdepartment.com ? Seems almost too good to be true, but from what I've read around, they've got some pretty decent reviews.

Not too bad. Any other suggestions? I want to have a few choices to run by them before we pick a host.

Although I am loathe to suggest anything by Microcrud, they are offering free hosting through one of their "Live" services right now. Can anyone else on OTS remember what they're calling it?

I know they're offering e-mail service for Internet domains. But I'm not aware of any hosting. Might be worth a look. I don't mind this whole Live approach they're taking. Offering plenty of services that integrate with one another. But of course it's just another attempt of theirs to conquer more market.

I've used domainsatcost.ca to get .ca names for cheap.
godaddy.com I've gotten .com's for cheap; but I believe domainsatcost.ca is better. I think theres a domainsatcost.com ; not sure if they're the smae company or not?
i see alot of adds and pricing for 1and1.com in maximumpc magazine. they have domain registration, and webhsoting solutions for fairly inexpensive prices. Cant say I've used them (yet).
Ive used canaca.net for hosting solutions, as they were canadian, and cheap.
Id be cautious of dotable.com; it looks to be an australian based hosting company, meaning if your prime target of traffic is in northamericans, there is going to be a noticable increase in page retrival time. Another problem will be that the hosting company might not "go down" but if there is a break in connection between here and australia, you may not be bale to call up your website. If you had a north american hosting company, lets say in texas, but then theres a break in connection in chicago, it will route itself through california or newyork, around the break. This might not be possible with an australian hosting. This would be the same for european hosting companies too.
Also, you can go with just about anythign if all you are going to be using is html. Dont get sucked into fancy extra features you wont use...
however, if you plan on having a forum or bb (liek this forum) or some sort of content manager, you will need hosting that supports databases (like mysql). I liked canaca since they offered other packages for only a few dollars more that had the databases if i needed them.

It's based in Australia, but their servers are in California (from what I read).
And you reminded me, we might be adding a forum or database of some sort, because we plan on having members be able to add to their content. But that's a maybe, it's still in our collection of ideas. I'm kinda the lead organizer for this, so I'm making sure they know that this is going to be well planned and designed before we even start paying for a host. Keep the suggestions coming, this is excellent help. Thanks everyone.

That is correct. They also have came highly recommeded from 3 or 4 hosting sites i've been too. The owner use to own another hosting company, and was bought out for a quater of million, he turned around and started another one. From what i seen browsing the forums the owner post answer to almost every support ticket that is open, and they are answered promptly. I plan on moving to them in the summer.
EDIT: And from the search i just did most hosting review compayies give them between 90 and 100. And thier are alot of good reivews to read up on.
