Looking At New Motherboards

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Although I don't need better hardware to run Vista, I'm thinking of upgrading some of my old components when I finally do get Vista. One of the main things will be my motherboard. I'll be getting a Core 2 Duo, so I'm looking at LGA 775 boards. When I click on "LGA 775" at Newegg, it gives me an option to narrow down by CPU type. I thought LGA 775 was only for the new Intel CPUs, but it's showing "Core 2 Duo / Pentium 4" and combinations like that. What's the deal with that socket?

I dont know much about those differences in sockets. But this Conroe mobo is said be good.

The E6400 is the best bang for buck Conroe cpu. But if you feel you can afford a E6600. You have a cpu that even beats the mighty AMD FX 62.

Then just get an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro cpu cooler, and some good DDR 2 RAM. And you are fine.

Awesome, thanks! I'll come back to this post as a reference when I'm ready to actually do the upgrade.

O.k.

You're welcome.

Okay, it's getting closer to my B-Day and I'm starting to look back on this.

One problem I have with that motherboard after a second look is that it only has one IDE controller. My current mobo is the same way and I have 4 IDE devices, so I had to have a PCI IDE controller in it. I found that pretty annoyiong.

I was wondering if you knew of any similiar motherboards in price/quality with two IDE contollers?

EDIT: How about this?

Jetway is not one of the most popular brands of mobo on OTS, but then AMD compatability is more popular than Intel on here. I'd go with the reviews on Newegg and make doubly sure that the board you select has all the features you want. One review of that mobo was by someone upset because the SLI was not completely useable because of a missing bridge for the vid cards, but all the rest were positive reviews. Keep in mind also that 10 reviews is not a large number. I usually try to go with a mobo with at least 15 of them if possible to avoid having to return the mobo because of problems - even though having all good reviews is still no guarentee that you'll have a perfect one.

Jetway? hmm, agree with pd. That is a kinda budget brand. Just like Pcchips, and Asrock. Even if Asrock have done a couple of good ULI mobos for AMD .s 939 with both AGP and PCI E support. I would say the Epox mobo in the link below instead. I like Epox, as everybody know by now. (I have 2 different, PCI E rigs with Epox mobos.) But for a good reason. Reliable, often fast mobos, extensive bios and easy to set up. And Epox, does'nt rush to release a new socket mobo, as many other brands do. It can actually take quite a while for Epox to release a new kind of mobo. That, I think is a sign of carefulness.

And all people I know who owns one likes them.

This mobo is a GLI mobo.

Explanation here:

#The board is not SLI certified, but it is "GLI" (Graphics Link Interface) capable. This means the board comes with a standard PCI Express x16 slot , but the second graphics slot only has a 4x electrical connection driven by the ICH7R Southbridge. The goal here is to offer a second slot for multi-monitor support using two PCI Express graphics cards. Some may find this confusing as the package comes with a bridge clip labelled SLI, yet the Installation Guide shows two graphics cards installed and makes no mention of the bridge clip whatsoever. So do you need a bridge clip? Currently, no. The latest driver sets have lockouts preventing two NVIDIA cards from running in SLI mode for improved performance.#

You will have a very tuff time finding a mobo with 2 x IDE controllers these days.
Besides, a PCI dito is often better than the onboard one.

IDE hd's is not that much in use nowadays. Most people wants SATA or SATA II.
That's why a mobo with more than one hd IDE slot or 1 IDE controller, is rare these days.

If you pick this mobo? Then you need DDR2 667 RAM.

This is a good and cheap cpu cooler, if you feel you need something more silent and that cools better than the stock Intel cooler.

Do you have a 24 pin ATX power connector on your psu for the mobo?

If not? You will have to get a converter cable 20 pin psu to 24 pin mobo.

Okay, I guess I'll just deal with the PCI IDE card until I get a SATA HDD. Thanks for the info though :-)

Or if you want a more future proof mobo, that also runs Quad core cpu's? Then maybe this is a good pick?

This actually have 2 x ATA100 up to 4 Devices

Check out the Asus mobo I also listed. It got 2 IDE controllers.

You're welcome.

Okay, I decided i'm going to get a SATA drive (SATA is generally faster right?), so I won't need to worry about multiple IDE controllers.

So, now I'm thinking about cases. I want to get a new case because mine is gigantic. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but it's just too big.

Me and my friends have been talking about doing some LAN parties, and I want to have pretty portable case.

What do you guys think about Mini Towers? Are they just way too small? Do they typically have poor airflow? Do they support full ATX motherboards?

EDIT: Nevermind, they don't have any good ones on newegg anyways.

Mini towers or LAN party cases are pretty noisy and the cooling ability is mediocre,
In order to be lightweight. The manufacturers have made such cases out of thinner aluminium. With vibrations and hardware noise as a result. You may not notice it at the LAN party. But well at home again. YAY!

Also, you wont find may such cases with more than 80mm fans = even more noise.

And you wont be able to fit any of the bigger videocards into it in a good way.
