RPG game suggestion please?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I want a RPG game.

And I have been on my way to get NWN II. But when I read about the problems with the AI of the guys that accopany your hero during the quests. I got a bit turned off.

I dont like having those guys running all over the place getting stuck somewhere and killed, or dissapearing when you need them the most.

I have played a couple of teeth grinding games that have such probems. And I'm not eager to do that again. I prefer RPG's where you dont have to drag half a soccer team along with you.

But you guys who owns NWN II. Is it that bad really, as some of the reviewers says?

Also, I dont like RPG with the same "first person view" as some RPG's have.

I like games with like third person view, just like the first NWN and Diablo .

Any suggestions?

Posted by: Bishop

technically speaking, the viewpoint in diablo / nwn is called Isometric, not third person. Third person view still requires a 3-d enviroment, much like first person.

Older games that you might want to check out are fallout, fallout 2, revenant, nox, and possibly septerra core.

O.k. Thanks!

Any newer games you can suggest?
Btw, I have played NOX some years ago. Pretty nice game.
Also liked the first Divine Divinity, even if the graphics whas'nt top notch, even with the standards of those times.

Posted by: Bishop

unfortunately they don't make too many of those type games anymore, and most online sales sites suck at categorizing, but you could check a few of them for any ideas.

Posted by: goranpaa

O.k. I will.

Thanks for the tip.

Sacred is a few years old, but I really liked it when it came out. It's a basic Diablo-type hack and slash game.

NWN II is OK and as they keep releasing patches I suspect it will continuously improve. I can't say I noticed a massive ai problem when I played, my main problem with it is the interface changes as I'm stuck on the radial menu from the original. I still play NWN I in an online PW ("Higher Ground PoA" shameless plug) and until they close this down I can't see myself moving to NWN II because of the massive content additions to this module (level 60 and added feats, etc) and friendly folks who play there.

Hmm, maybe I should get NWN II after all? I just play RPGs off line anyway.
And I think NWN 1 is one of the best RPG's ever made!

Thanks chainlink!

Mu is a great game. More addictive that heroine. The above link is to a private server thats a little more. . . exiting that the original global server.

You should really give Titan Quest a look if you like Diablo style games. It may take a bit of tweaking to get good performance if you have older hardware though. Otherwise, it's a great game. It kept me entertained for a good 3 months. It's also very fun over LAN.

Sacred is an older diablo-like game you may like. However, I personally thought it was retarded and uninstalled it after 30 minutes.

Thanks Halfcat! I will look into that game.

Hi Ion!

Well I read some reviews on it. And it seems very Diablo like. Wich is my cup of tea when it comes to RPG.

So I did download the demo.

Really liked it!

Did you know that there is a new Titan Quest expansion soon to be out?
It's called, The immortal throne. It will be out here in Scandinavia Mars the 3rd. So I guess you guys in the US, will be able to get it earlier than than that?

Here is a little something about it:

Titan Quest™: Immortal Throne™ is the action-packed expansion to the 2006 RPG hit, Titan Quest. Brian Sullivan, award-winning co-creator of Age of Empires and Titan Quest, continues the epic story across the dark and more sinister Underworld of Hades.

In this epic quest of good versus evil, players will encounter the greatest villains of Greek mythology, brave the attacks of Cerberus, and hazard the banks of the River Styx. Along with new foes, players will fight alongside Agamemnon and Achilles, interpret the prophecies of the blind seer Tiresias, and use the wiles of Odysseus to conquer this dark new adventure.

* 10 Additional Character Levels: Bring existing and new characters to new heights with higher level equipment and skills.
* 8 New Character Classes: Immortal Throne features an entirely new skill mastery, which combines with existing skill masteries to create eight new exciting character classes.
* New Exotic Monsters and Locations: Quest through exotic locations in the Mediterranean area and ultimately descend across the river Styx into the heart of Hades. Defeat terrifying new monsters on your way to victory!
* Artifacts & Enchanters: A new type of rare equipment that gives the player a powerful bonus. Plus, new non-player characters that can create artifacts from recipes.
* More Unique Equipment: Uncover hundreds of powerful new unique items and use Caravans to store them as you quest through the Underworld of Hades.

Thanks all of you guys for your nice tips. Now, I have some RPGs to choose from thanks to you.

Much appreciated!

Oh yeah i'll be all over it when it comes out.

The best thing about the game is the class combinations you can make. Makes for a lot of playability. I'm, sure I would still be playing it if there were more levels. I mean there's only so many times you can play the same areas over and over again.

It's a very good first game for a new developer for sure.

Posted by: goranpaa

Agree, the developer have really suceeded in doing a good Diablo like game. Have just played the demo and is already addicted lol.

This will be a "must have game" for me.

And I will buy the exspansion "Immortal Throne" in a blink of an eye. If the rest of this game is as good as the part in the demo? This game have very nice graphics also.

This is pretty much, what Diablo III would have been if it where to be released today.

Posted by: Boo_Ya_Sucka

If you liked Diablo, then you might like DUngeon Seige 1 &2. The 2nd one has an expansion that came out last summer as well. Its hack and slash and loads of items. I had fun playing for awhile.....then I got WoW.....

Posted by: goranpaa

Hi!

Yeah, after reading your suggestion, I read up about Dungeon Siege.
DS II seemed to have good graphics. And the DS series seems to be, just as you said a bit like Diablo too. Wich is as said before, my cup of tea.

So DS, may very likely end up on my buying list of worthy, old school hack and slash RPGs.

Thanks for the tip!

Posted by: Ion Silverbolt

DS was fun for a month, then it got repetitive. It plays a lot more like a RTS game than an action RPG. If you like controlling a party of characters ala Baldur's Gate, you might like it. Although the story element isn't near as good as BG.

Posted by: goranpaa

Well, I have played Baldurs gate and Icewind Dale 1. Good stories in those games. And Icewind Dale 1 whas quite enjoyable. But I did'nt really like the fighting system (RTS system). And I'm not that happy about having to drag along a whole team.

The best "team RPG" game in that respect I have played, where Spellforce 1. But that is more of a RPG / strategy game mix. A very nice game actually, with the 2 expansions. Even though the graphics whas'nt especially exciting. About NWN 1 class.

I have seen some games, where the other guys you drag along, have a more or less bad AI and just wander off on small expeditions of their own, or get stuck somewhere down the road. Wich totally destroys the fun of playing the game. You end up playing the game in a frustrated and angry mood.

So maybe I will reconsider about DS?

The PC based RPG's I have played so far, that I have liked best is:

Diablo (of coarce)
Divine Divinity 1 ( The second DD, hade a rather thin story, that made that game less interesting).
NWN1 + expansions.
Sacred
Spellforce 1 + expansions
Titan Quest ( The demo so far)

I would like to add, that WoW and other on line RPG games does'nt interest me.

Tired of the rude people, and the cursing and cheating on line. I whas pretty surpriced to find it, even in such a "gentlemens game" as golf (Tiger Woods on line). Even though it whas less often there.

I sometimes take a short run of BF 2 on line. But less often these days.

I tend to play 99% off line nowadays.

Posted by: Ion Silverbolt

Yeah online gaming is the pits becuase of that. It can be cool if you play with people you know, but random games are out of the question. It's usually not so much of a problem in coop games, but if you're fragging everyone left and right in HL2, you're going to get cursing.

As for DS, I remember having that wandering PC who would lag behind, but it didn't happen too often. It still might be wroth it to get the game. I imagine it's dirt cheap by now considering it's age.

Posted by: goranpaa

Yeah, maybe I'll get DC. anyways, it's as you said, dirt cheap here too.
DS 2 Deluxe edt, wich contains Dungeon Siege 2 + Dungeon Siege 2, Broken World. Does'nt cost much.

If you want a long rpg game, try morrowind or oblivion. If you want one with a battle system, FF7 is the way to go.

Definitely my 3 favorite RPGs. Morrowind is 110% the best game ever made. Ultimate freedom, great story, great sound, and character customization. It doesn't get much better. It isn't really diablo style though.

I put in 100+ hours on morrowind, and still didn't beat it 100%. Thats not to say it cant be done, I just don't do side quests.

Posted by: goranpaa

I have played those games allready. And they are good. Very big, and Oblivions graphics are breath taking.

Posted by: goranpaa

Now I have played Titan Quest for several hours. And I have finished the first part of the game. More to go luckily lol.

Man, is this a nice game or what!?
Recommended for Diablo fans!

Posted by: goranpaa

I have just started to play the expansion, "Immortal Throne". Very nice too!
And going thru Titan Quest for the first time whas really enjoyable. Very big game with tons of side quests to do if you want to?

My fav character, is a combination of warrior and assasin (rouge).
Second best, warrior / hunter.
At least from what I have found out for the moment.

For you guys who are curious about the game.

Download the playable demo and see how you like it?

http://www.gamershell.com/download_13703.shtml

P.s. Not a especially demanding game. One of my friends, can play it on an older Dell pc with a Pentium 4. 2.0 GHz cpu, 1 gig of RAM and a Radeon 9600pro, without problems.

Posted by: Grantyt3

The only problem I've had with NWN2 is that it really needs a lot of power from your system. Even with my 7950GT, I still have to turn a lot of the settings down. I can see that you have an 8800 (lucky you), so I suspect that it'll run better.

I havn't noticed anything with the AI, but I'm no RPG connoisseur.

Posted by: goranpaa

Yeah, I have heard that NWN 2 is a problematic game in some ways. But it's strange, that such a powerful card as the 7950GT, can't run it on high settings? I mean, you should be able to run F.E.A.R. for ex. without problems on that card. And I cant belive that NWN 2 is as, or more demanding than F.E.A.R.?

Maybe the game needs patching? Or maybe it's a driver problem?

Edit.

Maybe if you got another gig of RAM. You at least would have smoother gaming in NWN 2 (and other games)?
