Vista rip off

I seem to remember a thread that you guys on the other side of the pond are paying, like $150.00 for MS Vista. (Not known which version though?)
I was thinking of upgrading until I just found how much it would cost me.
Bear in mind I am in the UK.
Quoted pirce of £369.00 For Vista Ultimate that folks is then less our VAT of 17.5% making £314.00 that is $618.00.
Question, is there anyone in the US that would contemplate paying $618.00 ?
I can build a very decent computer with new parts for less than MS want for software. Maybe they have shot themselves in the foot for not many people nor businesses will pay this type of money for just an operating system
I think my upgrade has just moved over very much to Linux.

But businesses dont need the Ultimate, there's the business version for much much cheaper. Also, most businesses need several licenses, so they go through MS's Volume Licensing program where they get Vista or whatever else for much cheaper per license. Most people only need the Home Premium version, which has a reasonable price.

That may well be the case in Texas, but not in the UK. The price of Premium version is only about £40.00 cheaper which makes it still carrying a price tag of $538.00, you may think that is cheap. Why would I want to buy a business version anymore I retired some years ago?
This by the way is for a SINGLE LICENSE of one user.

I just did a quick search on www.amazon.co.uk, and the prices listed there are lower than the ones you mention (£313.48 for Ultimate, £187.48 for Home Premium). Although still expensive (from my point of view), 187 isn't outrageous.
Take note that I never bought anything from www.amazon.co.uk, and I don't know if other people do, or whether it's a good place to buy something like Windows from.
There's also a load of different Windows Vista versions (as usual...), so I might not even have seen the one you meant.
But apart from all that, the first paragraph of my post might contain some useful info.

Thanks
I just checked out a couple of US sites
Price for Ultimate is $399.99 for full edition that works out at about £205.00
The price quoted at Amazon £313 works out at $610.00
Now you can see what I mean by Vista Rip off.
I don't think the shipping cost even from the US equals double the US price...

I think more people are buying Vista with new machines (partly because some chains, like PC World here in the UK don't give the option of XP due to 'agreements with M$' - glad some companies like Dell still offer XP, and now even Linux) and finding they don't like it. I can't see too many people buying it at these prices, here in the UK at least.

Well, people buying a new machine from a retail outlet (Best Buy, Circuit City, etc) don't really have a choice. It's Vista, or the highway. I believe Dell is still offering XP on some systems at customer request (correct me if I'm wrong), but that is just an function of Microsoft allowing them to do so. It won't be long before Microsoft stops supporting OEM versions of XP (if they haven't already, I don't know) and system builders won't even have a choice.
It sucks, but personally I'd rather sink my money into it now while it's still my choice to do so instead of later when it's the only option available (and perhaps higher in price). It is buggy and SP1 is 5-6 months away, but I think I'll still be picking it up soon.
