Oblivion Problem (Graphics Card?)
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hey guys,
Bear in mind I'm a virgin PC game player. I was recently recommended "Oblivion" by a few people so thought I'd give it a go. However, when I installed it and loaded it up, the mouse was so jumpy, slow, and laggy.
My computer is sufficiently fast as you can see from my signature. Is it a graphics card problem? Based on how crazy low the amount of RAM in the graphics card is, I'm assuming that is the problem.
If so, can you recommend a graphics card that will be suitable. Also bear in mind that soon I want to run 2 x 20" monitors at 1600x1200 resolution (already got one of them) so it would need to have dual outlets I'm assuming?
I have a mid-sized tower. I could be way off here but will any graphics card, no matter what you recommend, fit into this sized tower? If not, again, please recommend most suitable.
Happy to pay whatever it takes that will solve my problem. Doesn't have to be the Ferrari of graphics cards.
Thanks!

With the videocard / videochip you have now. You can forget Oblivion ( Very demanding game. Just like F.E.A.R.) Also 1 gig more RAM ( same speed and size. 2 X 512mb or 1 gig stick? as you have now), will make the gaming more smooth.
Such an integrated videochip as the one you have now. Is'nt meant for gaming at all.
I suggest you let Oblivion rest until the Geforce, midrange 8600 series directX 10 videocards is out in mid april. Those, will be more future proof cards, than the dx 9.0 dito.
Or if you can't wait?
Geforce 7600GT, 7900GS. EVGA, Gigabyte and Leadtek are good Geforce brands.
Radeon X1600pro / X1600XT and X1650XT, X1800GTO or X1950Pro. Gecube, HIS, and Powercolor are good Radeon brands. But if you choose the X1950 card? Then you need a good Psu, with at least 28 Ampere on the + 12V rail. Or 20A on dual +12V rails. And preferably at least 500W. That also, probably goes for the 8600 cards?
The 7900GS and X1950Pro, will allow you to run games on high settings without lag. Providing your amount of RAM is sufficient.
This is a good, and decently priced psu if you need a new one?

A good psu, can last for many years and thru several rigs.

Thanks Goranpaa!
So based on what you can see in my signature, what would I need to upgrade/improve so as to run games like Oblivion smoothly?
I need to find out what my current PSU is. I have a feeling it's 350W.
Were you also saying I need to upgrade and have my comp. running on 2Gb of RAM or is 1Gb sufficient?

Psu 500W (or more), with at least 20A on dual +12V rails or 28A on a single rail.
7600GT or Radeon X1600Pro / XT or 1650XT. And probably 1 gig more RAM. This is the cheapest midrange kit for making your rig a gaming proof machine.
Look at the label on the psu. It will tell you both the wattage, and amperage at the + 12V rail.
Preferred kit.
500W psu with, yada-yada-yada amperage on the +12V rail(s).
A 1 gig RAM kit.
Geforce 8600 of some kind. Or Geforce 7900GS OR X1950Pro.
I'll keep nagging about more RAM. This, because I had 1 gig before. But some of the tuffer games, like Oblivion and FEAR did get short lags now and then during fight scenes at high settings for ex. With a X1900GT 256mb card.
After getting another gig of RAM, The overall performance whas noticeable smoother.
But sure, you can probably manage with 1 gig in 90% of the games of today.
But the upcoming games, will be just as RAM thirsty as Oblivion and F.E.A.R for ex.
And when getting Windows Vista and gaming. You will for sure need 2 gig.
The best way to find out if a game will work before you buy it. Is to download a playable demo.
But with the kits above. You should'nt have any problems playing any game. It's just a question of, on what settings?
Another nice thing about the cards above. Is that in Oblivion. You can enable HDR lighting effects. Wich is very nice.
Edit.
I'm not totally sure? But you dont happend to be English are you? I have a faint memory you are.
