Dual Channel Memory Question

I have that dual channel memory (I think that's what It's called) on my motherboard.
I currently have 2 512 MB sticks on one channel. If I buy a one gigabyte stick, and I put it in the other channel, without another stick to go with it, will that screw something up?
So, I'd have 2x512 MB sticks, and 1x1024 MB stick.

yes, you need two sticks of equal size to run in dual channel. You could use different brands, probably get away with different CAS latencies, but having a 1 gig next to a 512 isn't going to give you dual channel I beleive. Dual channel effectively double the speed at which your memory is running, increasing the memory and losing dual channel would most likely have a negative impact on performance.

Well, I would have one complete dual-channel, with 2 512 sticks, and one incomplete dual channel. Having the other incomplete wouldn't effect the complete one would it?

They must both be complete. Either 4 X 512mb sticks. Same speed, and preferably same timings.
Or 2 X 1gig sticks. or 4 X 1 gig sticks.
1 complete kit + one incomplete. And you loose the dual ch.

oh, thanks for telling me that. I'll try to buy 2 512's at the closing CompUSA by my house.

Another CompUSA closing? What's going on with them?

The one by me is closing too, newegg still has better deals

Yeah, except it's still hard for them to beat the going out of business sales if you happen to catch them before they're over. I remember one computer builder at a now closed CompUSA who used to recommend NewEgg to people all the time.
