Vcard drawing problem??
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

So this has been happeneing for sometime. probably a few months, I just figured at first whn I was playing wow, that my wow installation was corrupt, as it seems to always get corrupt and I have to run the built in fix program. HOWEVER I got the Lord of the rings online demo/beta and its doing the EXACT same thing, only much worse.
It seems to draw random artifact type like things durring game play.
I have the latest forceware drivers, and Directx9 (direct from microsoft) installed and updated. I have reinstalled windows and had this problem before and after.
Only my ram is currently "overclocked" (I say overclocked in quotes, since my mobo seems to use the wrong timings than what corsair says my ram should run at, and Ive adjusted the timings higher to what corsair recommends for my series and model).
I am probably guessing my video card needs to be RMA'd since its still under warranty... As I dont get any errors, meaning im doubting this is a software issue.
I am running a legit copy of Windows XP Professional SP2.
amd x2 3800+
BFG 7900gt 256mb
2gb corsair XMS dual chan ram
asus A8N-VM CSM mobo
Anyone else have this happened to them?
Ill probably phone bfg to see if i can get help next week.

Here are screen shots of WOW and LOTRO
These "artifacts" seem to draw forever untill they are out of view, and they stay, and I can have my veiw move around them 3d like.
I also get some random stuff flash/flicker on my screen which I cant seem to screen shot as it only stays upfor one frame, and I have no luck capturing it.

My best guess is overheating. Make sure the fan is working on the vid card. And if need be, open the side pannel and put a house fan next to it. That sometimes works when things are gettin' really hot. haha.

I agree, it's probably overheating. But could also be an insufficent psu.
Checklist:
Does your power supply meet the mimimum videocard requirements? = A 350W PCI Express compliant system power supply (with +12V rail, current rating of 20A or more).
I'll guess you have the wattage. But how about the +12V rail(s)? Check the specificaton label on the psu.
The BFG cards is often factory overclocked. Maybe you should try lower the gpu and and memory speed back to standard, using Riva Tuner for ex?

Your BFG 7900GT have these specs:
Core Clock 475MHz (vs. 450MHz standard)
Memory Clock 1360MHz (vs. 1320MHz standard)
What is the case temp load?
Room temp?
Download NVTemplogger, and set it to log while gaming.

If it shows, you need a better vga cooler? Then the Zalman VF 900 CU is a great choise.
Especially if you pair it up with some Arctic Silver Ceramiqe paste.
http://www.zalman.co.kr/eng/product...dx=192&code=013
Costs $44.85 CAD at NCIX.

But you could also try arranging, a spare case fan blowing at the card.

Have you tried cleaning the card.
Posted by: FadedMaster
Ah yes, that's another thing, make sure the case is cleaned out of dust (carefully use compressed air), and make sure the fans all spin easily and aren't clogged with dust. If they are, lubricate them.
That could be causing heat problems too.

I'm a fairly religious case cleaner. Although i have been lazy lately and hadn't cleaned the inside of my machine for about 1.5-2months now (lol... I usually do it once every 3-4 weeks). But I did do a dusting. It wasn't too bad dust wise, there were a few bunnies hiding in a few parts of the heat sink, but nothing much worse than what most computers come from a factory.
AS for power, that is a good question. Mentioning this does remind me that i did a few months ago switch psu's (wanted to try out a different psu, cause my other one seemed to make a fair bit of noise). But I am running right now a "enermax SFC a" (model number egh465p-ve) link and its rated as 460w max. ITs not a cheap 30 dollar psu, or one of them shitty ones that comes with cases.
I cant remember exactly what my other psu is, and I cant find it at the moment (either its at the bottom of my spare parts bin, or in another case... i rooted through some of it) but I know its an antec truepower I believe it is this psu
What I did do however, Is I noticed for what ever reason, I was using an adapter to take two 4pin power dongles, and make it into one 6pin v-card power dongle... so i removed the adapter and used the already available 6pin power dongle... i must of been drunk when I was building this thing, lol.
The NVtemplogger is reporting that the vcard is idle at 50-55C.
I have the thermostat in the house at 19C
The Vcard seems to run around 63-67c AT load (playing WOW)
As for case temp, couldnt tell you...
a bit high, but nothing i think si too high?
Posted by: goranpaa
Nope, everything seems fine.
That Enermax is good. You should even be able to run a GF 8800GTS at, it or a Radeon X1900 card without any problems.
The +12V rail is rated 33A. So no worries there. And 63 -67C load at high resoloution and the quality settings cranked up, is pretty normal for such a card.
Did the cable switch make the problem go away?
Posted by: eyekanspele
so far, nope still getting it.
Ive been monitoring the temp and stuff, and it seems once awhile ill spike to 69C, and thats when it starts to happen, but I lat tab and let to die back to 60c, and alt tab back in its good?
I think I will email bfg tonight and see what they think though.
I didnt think I was doing anything out of the ordinary.

O.k. But why not clock the card back to the standard speed for the 7900GT? As I said before, your card is factory overclocked.
I had a similar problem with an 6600GT before. I had to underclock the card just a thad bit to keeping it from freezing in games. But in your case it cant be called underclock.
Do you have any possibility to try the card in another pc?
Posted by: eyekanspele
Tried under clocking, as soon as it reaches the same temperature same things are drawing.
I guess in theory i could under clock it so it has a hard time reaching that temperature, but I may as well not even have the 7900. The other option is to get a better cooler to keep it under the problem temperature, but this will void the warranty and may not even work...
As for another pc, I do have another motherboard, but I would have to go through a crap ton to get it going (install windows, mount it in a case, etc...) but I'm fairly certain at this point that the card is fubar'd.
I just emailed bfg, time to see how great their warranty service really is then

If you change your mind about getting a better VGA cooler?
Then this is very good:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16835118001
Pair it up with some Arctic Silver Ceramique paste and it will run the card a lot cooler than the stock.
My previous X1900GT whas kinda hot. But also the stock cooler sounded like a hair drier when spinning up.
I got 8C lower temp load, on the lowest speed setting with this Zalman vga cooler. And a whisper quiet videocard.
And it's pretty easy to mount. The instructions are very clear.
If you want something better than the Zalman, and pretty much more expensive? Then get the Thermalright HR 03 and a silent 92mm fan for it.
But I would be surpriced if the Zalman VF 900 did'nt fix the temp problem for you.

Kinda want to keep the warranty...
But after waiting for an email back from BFG for aobut 5 days, I may have to go that route... -_-
Going to maybe have to actually call someone *gasp*
