In a couple of days the midrange DX10 cards 8600GT and GTS will be out. It seems like XFX and EVGA will be the first brands out to dance.

Here are a review of the XFX cards.

They are out but should I get one? I have been reading about the x1950 xt and people are saying its better than the 8600??

It's hard to say actually, if you should get one?

First, does your monitor support very high resoloutions?

Then, the 256mb- 128 bit 8600GTS may have a bit too small video memory amount. With the risk of taking a performance hit when running high res. and high quality settings.

I can't understand why Nvidia at least did'nt use 256mb - 256mbit memory instead?

And for 100 bucks more than the cheapest 8600GTS, you can get a 8800GTS 320mb. Wich is one hell of a faster card than the 8600GTS....and any Radeon X1900 card for that matter. My only gripe, is that it is first generation DX10 video cards. And I guess that the GF 8900 cards coming out later this year will hold a better value.

The 8600GT, is more or less a DX 10 version of 7600GT. And in that respect seems to have a pretty good bang for the buck.

Also, we have'nt seen what ATI have up their sleeve yet? Their DX10 cards, may prove to be an even better choise than any Nvida card.

But your main problem is also, that you will need a new psu for any of the cards above you wanna upgrade to. Except for the 8600GT, that exactly meets the minimum psu requirements for the +12V rail on your psu = 18A.

But any card bigger than that. And you need a psu, capable of 450W minimum and at least 30A on the +12V rail(s) The X1900 cards for ex. needs 30A minimum.

But should the new psu be pretty future proof, it need to be at least 500W.

This is a good one for ex.

Another argument, is that as Vista still have pretty bad driver support. And the service pac 1 wont be out before this autumn. And on top of that, there will just be 2 or 3 game titles out this year for DX10. And you will have to get another gig of RAM at least to be able to run games and Vista in a good way.

I wonder if not the best way would be to upgrade your psu. And if you wanna get a new card? Get a X1950Pro, 7900GS or a 7950GT. And wait until next year to get any DX10 card. Any of those 3 cards are great bang for the bucks. And if you pick the X1950Pro? Then get the Powercolor version with an Artic Cooling Accelero 2 pre mounted. Or if you wanna have a 7900GS or 7950GT? Then pick a Gigabyte or Chaintech with a Zalman cooler pre mounted.

The extra bucks more for the pre mounted third party cooler, is well worth the money. As you get better cooling. And above all, more silent cooling.

Great, but if you click on the "current pricing" link the prices for some printers come up and not the video cards!

The cheapest 8600GT is $169.99 (XFX). And the cheapest 8600GTS is $199.99 (Leadtek for ex.)

Tiger direct have higher prices for the GTS version than newegg btw. The GT have the same price tag in both shops.

Today, I read some more reviews on the 8600GT and GTS. It becomes more and more apparent, that the 8600GTS is'nt a especially good deal. The 8600GT seems to be a better choise then. Especially the factory oc'ed XFX card. At least, if you have a 7600GT or below performance vice. And you really wanna get a DX10 card for a decent price right now.

But I belive that we will see a 8600GTS out with 256mb - 256mbit interface pretty soon. As Nvidia hardly can avoid to notice all the criticism of the low memory on the 8600 GTS.

Also, the fact that the 8600GTS gets spanked, by the 7900GS, X1950Pro and the 7950GT in the F.E.A.R. benchmark and some other tests, makes one wonder what Nvidia thought of making this card? If the GTS have had a price tag around 150 bucks it would have been an o.k deal. But for a card with a 200 USD price tag and more?!

And as the 8800GTS 320mb seems to get cheaper. That is as said before, a far better deal for the moment than the 8600GTS....Providing your case can take it ? (23cm long) And your psu can provide enough juice? Minimum 400W and 26A on the +12V rail(s).

is it risky running a 8800 gts with my psu? I have been reading some stuff and reviews about it running fine with a 18A and a 400 watt psu. Since I don't want to invest another 100 bucks in a new psu. Unless I get a job soon which could work or wait some time. What is there to hurry I can wait and bear with my 9250.

Yes, it certainly need 26A minimum. Othervice you risk straining the psu. With system instability and other nasty stuff coming to haunt you sooner or later. But are you sure those guys had a psu with a total amount of 18A at the +12V rail? Or whas it 18A per + 12V rail?

If you can live with your 9250 for a while longer? Then wait and see how the dx10 Radeons will turn out?

I'm pretty sure they wont do the same misstake as Nvidia with their midrange cards.

by any chance goranpaa do you have a video card for sale or anything?

Posted by: goranpaa

The only crd I have for sale is a Sapphire X1800GTO With a Zalman VF900. It's 8 months old. The Zalman cooler is 3 months and I want 100 USD for it.

But with the freight cost from Sweden to you. It wont be worth it. As you can find several good midrange DX 9.0 cards for under 100 bucks.

A couple of examples:

Lol you can even get the 8500GT, wich is about the same performance as a 7600GS for under 100 bucks.

Maybe not a super card. But still a lot faster than your 9250 anyway and dx10.
