Fire! Fire!

I opened my computer case and put the floppy drive from my niece's Compaq into it. Looks like either the PSU didn't like it and poured too much power into that particular plug or something else was shorting it out. The way the side fan of this case pumped out the smoke you'd think my smoke detector would have gone off. I've roasted turkeys in my oven and had it go off with NO smoke. Anyway, here's a pic of the burnt wires...

and what is your new power supply going to be?

That sucks.

The power supply didn't burn out, so I am still able to run my system right now - just not with a floppy drive as the other small plug is to the video card. I am planning on getting a new power supply anyway since the current one I'm using is a 350 watt supply. I also have to get a new case since the power switch on the previous one died. I am using a case that has both its front USB ports broken at the moment. I do not plan on buying them in one package though because I've had two PSUs that arrived with defective voltages. The one I'm using right now is http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat...4490&CatId=1077
It is also possible that the wire brushed against a heat sink and that it was not the power supply itself that caused the problem.

Sorry to hear about the short out.

But if you need a new case? get the CoolerMaster 534 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16811119104 I told you about before, and maybe this psu?

With 2 X 22A on the + 12V rails and 485W. You can run any video card you like. Active PFC is also a nice thing.

Active PFC

The preferable type of PFC is Active Power Factor Correction (Active PFC) since it provides more efficient power frequency. Because Active PFC uses a circuit to correct power factor, Active PFC is able to generate a theoretical power factor of over 95%. Active Power Factor Correction also markedly diminishes total harmonics, automatically corrects for AC input voltage, and is capable of a full range of input voltage. Since Active PFC is the more complex method of Power Factor Correction, it is more expensive to produce an Active PFC power supply.

140 bucks for the case and psu is a good price tag.

Yeah, I bookmarked the case when I read your response to the dude who was asking about water cooling. Nice to see there's a choice of color for the front too. I was thinking of possibly saving up for the Antec Nine Hundred for a future build.

At the moment the fact that I've got the busted case that I was going to let my brother-in-law have doesn't really make a great deal of difference to him. He doesn't use his family Pentium S for work anymore though. At the moment he's still able to catch up on work on the Pentium 3 he's borrowing from the circuit board plant where he works. I gave him the bad power supply that came with my first case. Since he's an electrical engineer he says he'd probably even fix it himself. My niece is at her dad's alma mater and still making her mind up between engineering and computer science. Shelling out the buck$ for her Clarkson education isn't cheap, but what worries him even more is my 16 year old nephew. He wants to go into computer science! As my b-i-l likes to say, "hey where'd my paycheck go? Oh! Junior ate it!!!"

That is indeed a nice case. If you want I can take some pictures of my tower to show you what it looks like with all my gear inside it. The airflow is decent. Except if you mount an intake fan on the front, you might need to drill some larger holes into the front of the tower since the side vents aren't the greatest.
