LCD TV Problem

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have just recently bought an LCD TV, a 32inch Westinghouse. Rather nice for the price. Anyway, I've had it since about January and have been using it as my computer monitor/tv, however a few weeks ago, I ran into a problem. While I was messing around with my PC as usual, the screen started to get brighter, not quite sure what was causing it I just simply restarted. However, on reboot I realized the screen just kept getting brighter and brighter until finally it was completely white. I assumed the VGA cable died as there is nothing wrong with my video card. (I had hooked up an old CRT monitor.)

After coming back from a short trip to my local Bestbuy, I removed the old VGA cable and put the new one in. Same problem. The screen was completely white. Baffled that the new VGA cable was dead, I grabbed my old LCD monitor and plugged the cable in and everything appeared fine. I also did this with the other cable that I assumed had died, and lo and behold the screen appeared fine when I hooked it up to my old LCD. Next I assumed it was some kind of setting on my computer, so after ****ing with the Catalyst Control Center for a few hours, I realized it was fruitless. However it is worth noting that after playing with the refresh rate, I did get a vague picture on the LCD TV, but it only lasted a short while and soon after faded completely white. Anyway, I finally broke down and just formatted. After I finished re-installing windows and the like I tried one more time. SAME THING. Same white screen.

It is also worth noting that the TV is fine as far as I can tell. I can switch successfully back and forth from the HDMI to VGA and watch TV as if nothing is wrong. Also, when I switch to the VGA setting, I can access the TV's menu, so I am not sure what to think. I've been meaning to try tech support, however I kept forgetting so I decided to just simply post here. I'm not sure if some setting is off on my computer or if the TV is some how messed up. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

You're problem is simply the Westinghouse TV. They are notorious for having several problems. It is the most commonly serviced and returned TV at Best Buy (I work in Home Theater).

I refuse to sell them without service plans, I've pissed customers off because of that, but I straight out tell them that there's a good chance something will go wrong with it. If you have the service plan on it, get it repaired, if not, try the manufacturer.

To conclude: Westinghoues has no business manufacturing televisions.

I would return it under warranty.

I noticed that Best Buy had Westinghouse PC monitors but that Circuit City did not. I've done some research and it appears that Westinghouse has a bad rep when it comes to monitors as well. The 1960s and 70s are long gone - when Westinghouse and Zenith made the best TVs on the market. I'm not even sure that Zenith makes TVs anymore.

Zenith was bought out by LG. LG's televisions are pretty decent. Not bad at all for the money. However, this year's models don't look quite as good. It seems to vary from TV to TV, even on size for the same series. It's really weird. It's not the way they're hooked up or set up either (I've toyed with them).

I wasn't even aware that Westinghouse made televisions that were good at one point. But yes, you're right times have really changed. CRTs are very different from the flat panels and that change in the technology is what I think caused many manufacturers to fall behind.

Anyways, do try to get it covered under the manufacturer. If you bought it from Best Buy, just simply call 1-888-BEST BUY. They'll be able to tell if you bought the service plan or not, and if not they'll try go get you in touch with the manufacturer.

Thanks for the replies guys, but oddly enough, IT WORKS NOW LOLWTF. I hadn't gotten around to returning it to best buy, however the other day I decided to clean my workstation and that included unplugging everything and retying the wires etcetc. I unplugged and replugged my TV. Now it works. What. The. HELL. Anyway, thanks again for the replies. :O

Sometimes just unplugging things and replugging them in works. I reset my router and cable modem by turning the power off and back on again when my PC says "local connection only" for example. My television resets when there's a power outage. It remains on the correct channel for using my DVD player, but then it has to have the channel changed and back again in order to have a clear picture.
