IBM R40 screen problem

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

As we ain't getting a lot of posts, I thought I would throw this one in to see if anyone knows the answer.
I have an IBM R40 laptop to repair. The problem is that the screen is bright. This happens in any situation, ie. in the BIOS screen, Windows etc. The display is fine when connected to an external monitor. The BIOS options seem to be correct. I was wondering if this is the inverter or the screen its self? Does anyone know the answer? I don't want to get the parts until I am sure.
Cheers

To me, it sounds like the screens brightness or contrast control is stuck on high. Or as you say the inverter

Yeah, I am thinking it is the inverter. as I have checked everything else that I can think of. Unless someone knows better?

It's unusual for an inverter to cause extra brightness. The backlights on the back of the screen may be screwwy. Again, very unusual. There's no utility on IBM's site for "power management" or some such nonsense that lets you adjust the screen brightness for "power saving" even while plugged in? Most laptop's screens will dim when unplugged, have you noticed that behavior or no? I would play with the power management end of things, then hit ebay for the inverter. They are cheap enough these days.

I have done everything power management wise. In the service manual it states that it could be the LCD components or the system board that can cause this sort of behavior. I have got a price for the inverter, but I am wondering if it is really worth it when the system board could be at fault. Just waiting for my bro to get back to me, to see if he wants to go ahead.
Thanks for the input.

If it was the system board one would most likely notice the same behavior on an external monitor. I think its inverter/backlight/lcd prob which is very common lappie problem.
