On web pages where windows media player is embedded in, the sound does not work. There is no problem with the video, but the audio just refuses to work. Anybody one why? Do I need an extra codec or something?

1st. try turning up the volume bar on those site's videos to maximum. They usually set themselves to the middle automatically. On my system that means that the video makes no sound. Sometimes they need Active X permission too. Otherwise, there are no codecs that you need.
Also, what browser are you using? Some of them have trouble with WMP embedded material. Some will play the video and not the sound. Others will play the sound but not the video. Still others will just open the box with the X marker in the upper left corner and play neither. My suggestion would be to try using a different browser and see if it works then.
Just a thought if you are thinking of going to Vista anytime soon:
In Vista x64 some video material will work on IE 7, but not on Firefox. Other video material will work with Firefox but not with IE 7. Firefox cannot install the standard Adobe Flash Player if you are using a 64 bit OS. If you try a manual install you get Adobe's boiler plate that says they're still working on making Flashplayer work with 64 bit browsers, but it can be used in a 32 bit browser even though the OS is 64 bit in the meantime. If you want to click on WMP material and open it in a separate WMP window Firefox will download the material instead of just opening it - even if you check the "do this every time for material of this type" for "Open with Windows Media Player" you have to wait for Firefox to download it each time. If you install certain games that use DX9 in Vista it will cancel the installation if you try install them without agreeing to install DX9 even though the next version of DX is perfectly capable of running the games. They want to check for themselves and then install....
