Moving files

I'm trying to move some files to my laptop so I can backup it before I format my hard drive. However when I try to copy the files, it says "Access is denied, file may be in use" When I try to open the file it says "Unknown file type".

I used unlocker to see if anything is using it, but nothing is. I tried using it to move the files, but no luck.

I tried using a file recovery program like RecoverMyFiles Pro, no luck there.
I tried using a file backup program like FileBackupPro, also no luck.

I really need these files, any ideas, anyone?

Notes:

I'm using win 2000. These files originated from Xp.
The files I need are on a HD that is connected to the laptop with an external hub.
I can move other files on the HD, but not the files I need.
The file extentions are mainly: Txt, Rar, Jpg, and Mov.

Thanks!

You could try a live Linux boot CD. This may enable you to transfer the files.
