XP issues with IE

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have had this XP machine for going on 4 years. I have had no issues with the machine other than suddenly I start having problems accessing IE. This is the second time it has happened, and the first time I ended up scrubbing and reloading, which I really don't want to do.

I have broadband cable. What happens is this. Once I open an internet connection, and then close it, the next time I try to open the internet using the IE Icon, it will not open. Sometimes using a shortcut to a page other that my homepage it will open, but not consistantly.

After several attempts, which sometimes freezes the machine for a couple of minutes, if I look in task manager, there will be several instances of Iexplore.exe in the list.

If I highlight and end task, then I can maybe click back into the internet. It as though Windows won't let go of IE when I close it. I ran the recovery console and ran CHKDSK /R which found errors, but did not fix this problem.

If I run World of Warcraft, there is no problem.

Any ideas on how to remedy this problem without formatting and reloading?

Possible virus or spyware?

Try scanning with your own antivirus first. And then a couple of on line virus scanners:

Also, run some anti spyware programs.

Here are some free ones:

I have already run my a-v, Trojan Hunter and Spybot which all come up clean. I will run a couple of online A-V's to see if they come up with anything, but just the way it acts makes me believe it is just a corrupt file(s) somewhere. However, my knowledge is not advanced enough to figure it out.

O.k.

One other thing. Why not run Mozilla Firefox instead then? It's a much nicer browser.

I very rarerly use IE nowadays. Only when there is a site service, that does'nt accept Firefox for some reason. But those sites services are very few nowadays.

You can easily transfer your IE settings and bookmarks to FF.

Firefox updates more often than IE too.

What version of IE are you using? If you are using IE7, is it possible that you could drop back to IE6 or even down load the IE7 installation file & re-install.

As goranpaa says though FireFox is much nicer & more secure than IE.

I am running IE 6. The last time this machine did the same thing (about 2 yrs ago), was when 7 first came out, so I installed it thinking that might solve the problem. It didn't and I discovered I don't like IE 7, so when I reloaded windows I went back to the trusty v.6. I also tried Firefox before the reload, and while the problem was not there, there was something I didn't like about it either (I can't put my finger on it). So I opted to format and reload. I really don't want to go through that again, but it looks as though I may have no choice.

I still belive, you should give FF a chanse. Much have improved since you last tested it.

Thanks, I may give it a try, but would still like to fix my other problem. I cant stand having a computer with an unresolved issue.

Why not try a repair installation of XP then? At least it's a lot less fuzz than reformat / reinstalling XP.

It wont remove anything you have installed, except the video card driver eventually. And the Windows updates.

Guide here:

Thanks goranpa, I had already run the repair console but was unaware that repairing in this fashion was an option. I will give it a try when I get a chance, and let you know the results. Once that is done I will give F-F a try again.

try lspfix and let it remove what it wants. Hijackthis and remove anything that says "internet hijacked" lol U got a internet hijack.. Try spyware progs in safe mode. If that fails doa winsockfix sorry I am too lazy to give you links like goranpaa =p

<-- Lazy

There are other browsers that you could try. Opera is one: http://www.opera.com/ Avant is another: http://www.avantbrowser.com/
I prefer FireFox myself though.
As goranpaa says, a repair install may well fix your problem. You may find that some programs will require a re-install, as some of the files they have installed might get changed. Doesn't happen that often though.

Thanks for the input all. I will try the fix this weekend and if that doesn't work, then Ill try the other items mentioned. It has to be something very basic that is corrupt. It doesn't affect anything but IE. Although if I dont end process on all the Iexplore.exe in task manager and shut the machine down, then when I reboot I get an error message saying windows was not shut down properly. No message if I end all of them first.
