linux on another hdd?

I was wondering if their is a way to install linux on a external hdd and boot it up on the pc... my pc is not done.. So I will be using my fathers pc, so any ideas?

Puppy Linux allows you to run it from an external USB HDD or Pen drive: http://www.puppylinux.org/user/viewpage.php?page_id=1
Or you could just use a bootable CD-rom with a live version of Linux. Most distro's offer this option.
