New SATA drive won't boot

I had an IDE 200G western digital HDD, that was nearing capacity. I purchased a new 750G western digital SATA HDD and installed it. Using the software provided, I added it as a new boot drive. Then I used the copy feature in the WD software to copy 151000 files to the new drive.
When I went into the boot sequence set up and changed the boot drive to the 750G drive, it would not boot. Just black screen forever...when I go back to the old drive, it boots fine...just a bit slow because it is near capacity. I did not delete any files from the 200G drive because I wanted to make sure the other drive was up and booting first.
Idea is to have the 200G drive as a storage drive.
Any suggestions on what I have done wrong or the best way to configure these two drives to get the best performance?
I tried reading other posts first, could not find a related problem, but there were a million posts on HDD installs...hope I am not asking a repeat question.

So you did clone the Windows installation to the new drive too? How did you format it?
Could be that the cloning did get corrupt. The best way would be formatting the 750 gig from inside Windows control panel. But then you will have to live with copying all those files again.
Btw, it's never a good idea to have Windows on the same partiton as the other stuff. It's even better to have the OS on another hdd.

The new SATA drive came with WD software called :data life guard tools". Instructions said to format the drive using that software. That software first warned that the system was not recognizing large drives, said it would correct and needed restart. When I selected "add a new boot drive" it said it was going to transfer all system and non-system files from the old boot drive to the new one. Then I used the copy utility on that same software to copy the 151,000 files. It all seemed to go without a hitch, except the drive does not boot.
I did not clone anything.
What I really want to achieve is the best performance, regardless of what processes I have to go through or redo etc.
I have no experience with creating multiple partitions, normally I just create 1 huge partition on the drive and that is likely a big mistake for performance.
Thank you so much for the immediate response to my problem, any suggestions where to go from here would be greatly appreciated.
OS is windows XP home. Can supply whatever other info is needed about my system if that would help.
Thx again.

Hmmmmm....i dont know if you already tryed this and how sata works....I still have IDE sadly, till my raptor comes, anyways, mm if im wrong i dont wanna sound like the idiot i am lol...
If you are useing your new drive as a main make sure it is set to main in the BIOS.
Try it again using the program after you formatt
Maybe try a diffrent clone program.

If I where you, I would do like this: Click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management.
Click the new hdd and from there format the drive and create a partiton 20 gig big for Windows.
It will be easier for you to see wich disk / partition is wich? By renaming them like for ex :"Windows disk" or partition, "Program disk" and "Back up" for ex.
When installing games or programs, it will be much easier for you directing the installation to the correct hdd / partition this way.

20 GB is kind of small imho. I have never used WD's data lifeguard but normally cloning is done with tools like norton ghost or acronis. You will want to unplug the ide drive to test the boot order of the hard drives (which can be managed in bios). If it doesn't work use the westy digital to check the drive for errors and get an error code to exercise warranty with WD.
