Looking for a new machine....

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hey all, been a while since I've been on here.

anyways, a friend recently asked me to help him choose his next machine. According to him, preferably a notebook. All he'll really use it for is word processing, email, and occasional video/music use. Basically he needs a fairly basic notebook, nothing fancy at all.

I also told him I'll take a look at barebone pcs or basic pcs since they could end up being cheaper than a laptop for him. The pcs are only to give him options though.

For now, when I look I'll keep my eye open for refurbished as well as new for notebooks, since he would rather keep price below $650 (canadian).

So yea, i'll be looking too, but im open to any of your suggestions aswell. If anyone can give me any links to good deals they've seen on american websites it would be great, all that matters is that they ship to canada.

thanks

I think laptops are over priced....I would rather have a custom Pc becuase they are better and cheaper and you donjt pay labor.

Personally I woul go for a pc, because of to easier upgradeing / troubleshooting and better cooling. But if he feels he wants the mobility? Then he should get a lappy.

For that very low budget, I think this is the best lappy he will be looking at:

As for building a pc?

Case:

Psu :

Mobo:

http://www.ncix.com/products/index....acture=Gigabyte

This mobo have a Geforce 6100 integrated video chip. But also a PCI E 16X slot, if he later on wants a "real video card"?

CPU:

HDD:

DVD:

RAM:

http://www.ncix.com/products/index....acture=Kingston

451 CAD adjusted in round figures upwards. So it will be a couple of CAD cheaper in reality.

Monitor:

http://www.ncix.com/products/index....0LCD%20MONITORS

Here, you have a better description of this monitor:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...001072&Tpk=740N

But maybe he can find a good monitor cheaper elsewhere? NCIX, does'nt have too much to choose from when it comes to good but cheap monitors.

Keyboard / mouse:

Total of 674 CAD with monitor, keyboard and mouse.

I agree with you, I told him a pc is cheaper and more adaptable, has the ability to be upgraded as better tech comes out. He said he'll think about whether he wants a laptop or pc. If he was going to get a pc, I'm sure he would only need a very, very basic pc.

Thanks for your suggestions so far, I'll pass them on.

Also, when I most recently talked to my friend, he said he'd be willing to pay up to $1000 if needed, to get a proper laptop/desktop. But for his needs, I don't think that much would be necessary.

Naah! If he's just going to use it for surfing and some allaround work. He will manage well with the pc or lappy I listed. And as said, he can just upgrade the video card (if getting the pc that is?) later on if he get a fit of "gameingitis" lol.

But if music is high priority? And he's going for a pc?

Get a good sound card and speakers for it.

This speakers / sound card will hang in there for a couple of rigs at least.
