How does the 8800 GT compare to the 7950 GT? Other than Direct3D 10 support, is it worth the upgrade?

I'm debating the upgrade right now too. From what I've been able to gather, I've decided to wait until some of the newer stuff comes out. But Goranpaa, I'm sure, will respond soon with some awesome details.

Lol! Thanks Faded!
Well Grantyt, lets say that the diffence between the 7950GT and the 8800GT is rather big.
Here are some figures for you:
Battlefield 2142 1600 x 1200 32 res and 4X AA 8 x AF and max quality.
FPS (FRAPS)
8800GT = 68.6
7950GT = 29.7
Might and Magic, Dark Messiah (same settings) + HDR
8800GT = 41.9
7950GT = 34.0
Doom3 same settings + Ultra quality
8800GT = 95.7
7950GT = 60.9
Oblivion (Outdoor) Same res, no AA 8X AF and max quality HDR enabled.
8800GT = 32.2
7950GT = 9.3
I guess the difference will be slightly bigger as soon as Nvidia gets out even better drivers supporting the 8800GT and the G92, gpu 8800GTS.
But I would like to add, if you are going for a 8800GT? Wait til the new cards arrive with the bigger and improved cooler. Like when Leadtek 8800GT "B" version Or the Leadtek ZL (Zalman edt) is out for ex.
Below, you can see the difference between the old Leadtek 8800GT and the B and ZL versions. The 8800GT with the old cooler to the left.

You could rank the DX 10 cards like this:
8800Ultra
8800GTS (G92) 100$ more exspensive than the 8800GT, But cheaper than the GTX. About 12 - 15% faster than the GT / GTX in the highest res.
88000GTX
8800GT (the performance difference is very small between the GT and the GTX. Maybe 10 FPS max in most games. In some games the GT performs on par with the GTX.
Radeon HD 3870 About 18% slower than the 8800GT. But when the catalyst drivers for this card improves the difference will be smaller. For the moment, the 3850 / 3870 Radeons have the more silent coolers compaired to 8800GT (with the small fan).
Radeon HD 2900XT. This is more exspensive, and perfoms on par with the newer, cheaper HD 3870.
Radeon HD 3850 512mb Best bang for buck, midrange DX 10 card for the moment. There is a 256mb version too. But running DX 10 games at higher res. requires lots of video memory. The 256mb versions of the DX 10 cards is only recommended up to 1280 x 1024 or 900 x 1400 widescreen res.
The new Radeons, supports the upcoming DX 10.1 But will probably be obsolete long before it's common that games supports this. The game manufacturers have their hands full making DX 10 games for quite some time first I guess.
8800GTS 640mb (G80) the old version
8800GTS (G80) 320mb
(7950GT 512mb sits here in DX 9.0 games of coarce)
8600GTS
8600GT
Radeon HD 2600XT
Radeon HD 2600Pro
8500GT
Radeon Hd 2400
