Freeze Up at Logon Screen

I have a problem that has perplexed me. I using a gateway laptop with XP SP2. When I press control+alt+delete to logon the computer freezes up. THe mouse or keyboard stop working. Any suggestions other than re-installing the OS? I had the same problem in safe mode as well.

Try and External mouse and Keyboard? Does it do the same? I know my laptop which has an Acer has a Fn + special key that disables the keyboard.

run a windows repair console and do a chkdsk /f c:. If the drive is fine, proceed with a repair installation of Windows.
