Posted by: goranpaa

Yeah, why not? Seems to be an o.k. rig for that money.

Posted by: shadysoldier

so everything is compatible and is their anything better for the same price?Anything you would prefer over some parts?

Posted by: goranpaa

No, not really. But if your father wants a bit more quiet case with a more aestetic look? Then the Antec P180 is a very nice pick. About the same price as the Nine Hundred case.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...antec%2bp%2b180

This OCZ 600W will also do. Even if you pick up a couple of 8800GT's later on.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16817341010

Will Will make the rig a bit cheaper too.

Posted by: shadysoldier

"Two PCI Express X16 slots (supports PCI Express BUs specification v1.0a compliant) (The 2nd PCI Express X16 slot will operate at X8 mode when SLI Technology has been enabled)"

would that be good for sli?

Posted by: goranpaa

Yeah, as the difference in bandwith between the the 8X and 16X is'nt something you will notice in day to day computing or gaming. Maybe if you benchmark you will see a minor difference in performance.

Posted by: shadysoldier

afk rebate and combo sales the psu's prices even out and the thermaltake seems to have more juice. my dad doesn't mind if his oc is noisy hes looking for th bang for the $

Posted by: goranpaa

Would like to add, that quite many SLI mobo's work this way.

O.k. But go for the stuff you picked then. It will make a nice rig for that kind of money.

Posted by: shadysoldier

hmmmm i read some other forums on 2x 8600gt vs 8800gt and they said the 8800gt would be better....
so do you think it would be better to go a

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16814130314

and the psu u told me

and i also read that sli has problems.....so.. wghich do you think is more effective for the bang for the buck.

1)1x8600gt(90$) with the thermaltake psu (80$)
2) 2x8600gt (180$) with the thermaltake psu (80$)
3) 1x8800gt(204) with OCZ PSU (60)

Posted by: goranpaa

Alternative 3). No way 2 X 8600 cards will beat the single 8800GT. Just have in mind, that with 256mb of memory. You will have a performance penalty in resoloutions over 1280 x 1024 or 1400 x 900 wide screen. Especially in DX 10 games.

A 8800GT 512mb will be a better choise if your fathers montor supports higher resoloutions than the ones abouve.

Zotac, is a pretty new brand on the market. But have allready, got a good reputation.

Posted by: shadysoldier

Hes planning on running 2 monitors at moderate resolution.

i was looking up on some things and found some better deal because the nine hundred went back up and have got....

looking for a better suggestion

I was planning on waiting for the new gpus to come out so the price will drop.

Posted by: goranpaa

Hi!

Seems pretty good. But I would swap the psu for this instead as it have more juice on the + 12V rails:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16817104037

The Antec P 182 is a nice pick. But take your time planning the cable routing! It can be quite tricky to get it neat.

I can help you out with some mods that will make this case even more quiet later on if you want to?

And you may wanna swap the pretty noisy Tricool fans for this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16835185057

You wont need any intake fan(s)! This case is meant for "negative airflow" i.e just exhaust fans.

And if you flip the psu upside down, with the fan pointing upwards. And seal up the case vents around the psu. You wont need the middle fan in the "psu tunnel" either. Wich means less noise of coarce. But also easier cable routing to the hdd's.

Just fill the compartment under the psu with foam strips to prevent noise amplification if you do this?

Use the hdd cage down in the psu tunnel. And remove the upper hdd cage for better airflow.

Posted by: shadysoldier

that sounds cool...makes me kinda of excited to put it together
.. hmmm does evga make good mobos? and would u reccomend a better one?

Posted by: P0nix

I don't think I would trust an eVGA board but have no personal experience with them. This is a pretty sweet price on a DFI board http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16813136032 (some argue the best). Intel boards are usually rock-solid stable but somewhat limited in options. This one is interesting:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16813130128

Posted by: goranpaa

Yeah, they are pretty good at making mobo's. But also check out Gigabyte. They may have a board or 2 that is to your liking.

Posted by: shadysoldier

Ok....sorry for being annoying and changing the pats a lot....
here again

i couldn't decide between
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16835186134

Any suggesting? and does the memory brands work with each other?Any thing you read about the part that isnt good?

sorry again....just want this to be a 100% stable long lasting pc.

Posted by: goranpaa

Seems good except for the mobo.

DFI mobo's can be very picky about the hardware. Does'nt like certain RAM brands and hdd brands for ex.

If you want a no fuzz but good P35 mobo?

Then look at this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16813128059

The Freezer 7 Pro is a nice choise.

As you picked a a 8600GT?

This, have a nice and quiet Zalman cooler:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16814150258

Posted by: shadysoldier

THX!
ya i know the 8600gt is a weak card but it will get the job done for a low price. For a gaming rig i would never tho.
thx again for the response.
I was looking at that mobo also, the reason i didnt post it is because it is ddr2 1066.
Can you put ddr2 800 ram in their?
or will it be better to go 2x 1 gig of ddr2 1066 then 2x 2gig or ddr800?

Posted by: goranpaa

Seems like some of the guys who bought the Gigabyte mobo used DDR 2 800 for it. Check the customer reviews.

And as this pc seems to be mainly used as a work station. It's a waste of money getting the DDR2 1066. And with the 8600 and the 800 RAM. He can still play a game or 2. On a res. up to 1280 x 1024 or 1400 x 900 widescreen and moderate quality settings in an o.k. way if he feels for it.

Posted by: shadysoldier

cool cool. So it wil be a stable machine no errors?
if so order will be made monday

Posted by: goranpaa

Yeah, I guess so, if the stuff you get does'nt have any flaws?
What cpu are you planning to use? According to Anantech, The GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L,
Supports the new Wolfdale Intel cpu's like the E 8400 for ex.

Check out this Intel Wolfdale and Yorkfield cpu - Motherboard compability list.

http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.aspx?i=3138&cp=2

Posted by: shadysoldier

sweet thx for the web site..:

hmm after a few days of research i found prof to my dad that e8400 is the greatest thing for the price.
Found like 10 trading pc businesses that sell that on most rigs then the q6600.
Another thing i learned was they use nvidia quadro4 nvs.
2 to 4 gigs of pc 800 ram

so is this a good card.....hard to tell because the specs suck
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16814133210

It also says i need a really DURABLE psu because if it goes down tuns of money can be lost.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16817139006
or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16817341002

im thinking the OCZ because idk i always liked them

sorry that im dragging this on, i know how annoying i can be

Posted by: goranpaa

You can pick any of those psu's and be happy with it.

As for the Quadro. It's the lowest end version. And If your dad does'nt do a lot of CAD and 3D work stuff ? (I belive this card would'nt do him much good there either really) I say, stick to the 8600GT.

Posted by: shadysoldier

Can the 8600 handle 2-4 monitors running multiply graphs on each one?that move every second

Posted by: goranpaa

I doubt you can run 4 monitors on a single card. 2 monitors should be possible though.
But this software may come handy for more than 1 monitor:

Posted by: shadysoldier

ok........I think i went overboard lol

gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L
INTEL 3.0 Ghz E8400
PNY 8800 GTS
700 WATT OCZ PSU
4x gig of gskill ram
1x 14 ft cat 6 cable
25x 7 ft cat 6 cable ( it was 7$ more then 5 cables)
Antec p182 gun metal black
150giig Raptor
ZALMAN CNPS 9700 110mm cpu fan
_______________________________11.00 shipping
=1400
165 MIR
=1250

Im sacred something is not gonna work right or a DOA =\
hopefully it goes well, thats alot of power it will last a while..

Posted by: goranpaa

Yeah, a liiiitle bit I think lol.

I don't think you have to worrie.

Just use an anti static wrist cord and take it easy while building, and you should be allright.

And take your time how to best route the cables in the P182. Can be quite tricky to find the best way.

But I always feel the same nervousness as you are feeling now. Before I fire up the new build for the first time and can let out a sigh of relive when it starts o.k. Who does'nt hate hearing the bios beeps you don't wanna hear, or get a black screen?

Posted by: shadysoldier

hopefully it doesn't end up like my first 3 rigs......i always have graphical errors

im so excited to test my gpu and find out it is my mobo.
that will be so awesome.
Mobo has 2 more years of warrenty

Posted by: shadysoldier

ok, i got the case yesterday, but parts got moved back a day for some odd reason.
I just finished putting it together. Everything seemed fine running 17oC on the CPU, every things looks good. But it says im running 2 gigs so i open it back up and push the ram in more it clicks and it says 4 gigs. While the case is still open i look to the over at the cpu u fan and it wasn't moving but it looked like it was trying to. It would like twitch. So i spun it with my hand it spun , but not as fast as it should.
hmmmm i just cant get a DOA free order.
Its the ZALMAN CNPS i think thats the name 110mm fan, universal cooler

Posted by: goranpaa

Do you have a mobo with a 4 pin cpu fan header? Maybe you just have used the wrong pins?

Or try connecting the Zalman to a 4 pin molex from the psu, via a 3 pin male to 4 pin molex fan adapter.

Posted by: shadysoldier

hmm
before i went to the store i consulted my manual...and saw the 4pin connector for fans had a extra pin for a controller.. don't exactly know what controller, so i look at the 3 pin fan thing on the mobo and seaw that the pins are virtually the same. so i plug it in that letting the controller hole not in a pin. Fan worked.....Question is why did it not work before and what controller?

Posted by: goranpaa

That fourth pin is the rpm controller for the fan. I don't know why some mobo manufacturers use 4 pin. As very few cpu coolers fans have this. The only one I know of is Arctic Cooling Freezer.

So it seems like you just happend to stick the fan connector on the wrong pins for a 3 pin fan.

Posted by: shadysoldier

but the new zalman cnps 9700 has a 4 pin connecter

here r some pics of the build

http://i30.tinypic.com/de8s2v.jpg
http://i32.tinypic.com/2n6ut06.jpg

Posted by: goranpaa

Hmm, strange with the cpu fan then!

But anyway, That is a very neat build you have done! Especiiallty considering the Antec P182, is'nt the easiest case to route the cables in.
The Zalman, lines perfectly up with the exhaust fans too, very nice. Should mean, that you can run the Zalman fan on pretty low rpm.

A tip. You can flip the psu upside down (psu fan upwards). And seal the case vents around the psu. This way, you can remove the psu tunnel fan. And have less noise but still good hdd cooling. And Then you can use this fan and the included wire, fan clips for the upper hdd cage for additional cooling of the video card if needed? You can see the rectangular holes in the back of the upper hdd cage for those wire , fan clips. Just remove the hdd mounts in the upper cage first.

Put foam strips in the compartments under the lower hdd cage, and under the psu stand (If you flip the psu that is) This will reduce vibration noises from the psu and the hdd's.

You can also take out the mounts in the upper hdd cage. They will disrupt / hinder the airflow from the intake. Or just remove the upper hdd cage all together.

Congrats, you have done a good job.

Posted by: shadysoldier

the psu is fliped =)
but it is a one fan out take? that blows upward now, but their is thier is a matel plate above the psu cage.

imma remove the hdd mounts

Posted by: goranpaa

O.k.

But that plate does'nt affect the psu fan as you have some space between the plate and the psu.

Posted by: shadysoldier

this may sound funny but after i installed IE7, i go to update again and it just lags and does nothing (takes up 50% of my cpu)......Any idea how to fix this

Posted by: shadysoldier

nvm I LOVE FIREFOX! the IE add-on owns

hmm how do you make it load windows with out making you click your user login.

i run about the same programs on my rig and start up is alot faster.

Posted by: goranpaa

Yeah, Firefox is the best! IE, is a piece of junk.

Posted by: shadysoldier

sdfsghsgdgs
this is so weird on his start up he cant open, ctrl panel or like my computer?
his old pc runs at 75oC =O.....os their a program up the fan speeds

Posted by: goranpaa

Yeah, Riva Tuner.

Btw, most of the latest forceware drivers, just let the series 8 cards run 29% of the fan speed by defaults. I have cranked up the fan speed fixed to 47%, using Riva Tuner. Then, the 8800GT fan noise perfectly blends in with the case fans and still gives good temps.

Posted by: shadysoldier

how exactly do i sue it to crank up the fans?

and how would i fix the problem with the odd start up? can it be zone alarms?or windows being stupid

Posted by: goranpaa

Like this:

1. In the Riva Tuner main menue. click the tab "settings". Check the box in this menue that allows Riva Tuner to start with Windows.

2. Back at the main menue. Click the button where it says "Forceware detected". Then the video card icon and the "Fan " tab.

3. Change the little window in the top, right corner from "auto control" to "direct control".

4. Move the "performance 3D " slider (The others will follow). And set the fan speed to your liking.

Don't forget to save the setting before you leave.

If you wanna learn more about Riva Tuner?

Then this is a good guide.

http://www.vaguesoft.com/users/dwoo...ials/rivatuner/

It could be the Zone Alarm. Shut it down and see what happends?

Or / and run CKDSK in the hdd propertys, under "tools".

If the Zone Alarm, gives you troubles?

Try Comodo firewall free. And Avira Antivirus free instead. Much less fuzz and better stuff than ZA.

Just be prepaired, that Comodo fw, will ask a lot of questions in the beginning til it have learned about your software.

Firewall here:

http://www.personalfirewall.comodo....d_firewall.html

Avira here:

http://www.free-av.com/

Posted by: shadysoldier

hmmm is their away to do that for a cpu fan and case fan. hmmm this pc uses a radeon 9200 with a passive cooler i guess it doesn't work well, so ill add a fan to it using those..thing forgot what they are called, but they are metal wire coated with plastic.
but i still can see how my cpu can be 75oC in a cold environment.

ok i came to a conclusion.... i added a old cpu fan to the heat sink on the card and it hasnt restarted yet. =D
and if it does im guessing the thermal grease is dry or cracked and will have to apply some arctic silver 5

Posted by: goranpaa

If you wanna regulate the fan / monitor temps for both the cpu fan and video card from the same program. I guess "Speedfan" is the best choise. Speedfan is a bit troublesome to learn to set up. But you have a FAQ at Almico home.

http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

Posted by: shadysoldier

i do chkdisk /r right?

Posted by: goranpaa

Yeah, running CHKDSK won't hurt.
