Add subtitles to .avi movies

Hellow
I have a move file "300.avi" to which i want to add english subtitles. I've downloaded the "300.srt" subtitle file and copied both files to the same folder.
When I open 300.avi with Windows Media Player , I still can't see the subtitles ...
Has anyone tried it before ? Or do you know of a good guide on how to add subtitle to .avi movies?

is .avi same as divx ?

i use VLC, 1) play the movie 2) drag the srt file into VLC while the movie is still running and it should work
