Phenom vs Penryn...

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

A friend of mine is looking to replace his CPU and motherboard in the next month or so. Probably with a mid-range to high end chip. So, AMD Phenom 9000 series, or intel penryn (wolfdale/yorkfield). Are there more penryn chips coming? Theres only one or two on newegg now, how long until they fill out the product line with a better variety of clock speeds to pick from? I know intel has been dominating for a while with core 2 duo, but did AMD steal the lead back with phenom, or was phenom not as good as it was supposed to be? And if AMD took the lead with phenom, will penryn be able to best phenom? I havent been keeping up with the benchmarks much lately, can someone fill me in on the current state of the CPU world?

Thanks!

the Q6600 RAPED the phenom...phenom could oc to 3 GHz on stock but Q6600 can go 3.6 GHz......but their is no need for quad core at the momnt because we cant even use dual core to the full potentional. Intel just came out with a beautiful CPU the E8400

phenom could get some usage on a 64 bit linux box. Two 64 bit quad cores in a linux box would be sweet indeed. Somewhat of a niche market atm.

The E8400 is the king for now at least.

Just make sure the mobo you pick have 1333Mhz FSB support. Or you will run into problems.

But if you think that's too much money? The E6750 is also very nice. 1333Mhz FSB too btw.

EDIT.

If your friend plans to get a GF 8800GT or 8800GTS 512mb OR one of the new Radeon cards? DO NOT! get a mobo with VIA chipset! This chipset is incompatible with the latest cards.
