A friend handed me a Compaq Presario M2000 which seems to be having all sorts of strange trouble. I eventually concluded the hard drive is to blame, though I have yet to confirm.
Here's what I have found out so far.
1. His trouble began with not being able to save files or losing files already saved to the hard disk, but apparently the computer works rather fine as long as you dont have to actually store any data.
2. I reformatted and tried a normal format. It stalled at 3% (first suspicion the disk is faulty). I proceeded with quick format. It installed fine (apparently) and worked for a bit. As I installed Office 2007, the installation stalled and gave me an "Unable to read disk." error. I tried Office 2003, same error. Both discs are perfect, theres nothing wrong with them.
3. I MEMTEST86'd. Nothing wrong.
4. Tried reformatting again. Same stalling at 3% format. This time I noticed an ever so slight reverberant click pattern coming from the drive when it tried to format after 3%. It would just stick there for many many minutes. I eventually gave up.
I'm not sure where to go from here. Is there anyway to isolate any bad sectors and use whatevers left of the drive or should I find some cheap drive somewhere and swap it? Any other suggestions?

Hi!
I guess you should start to look for a cheapo hdd.
As you say the read / write problems and click noises.

Is there anything cheaper? Maybe a used drive for under 25?

The problem is, that the lappy you got runs the old P ATA hdd interface. This means lower demand and unfortunatly also higher price.
I can't find any cheaper than that. But maybe if you check out E Bay?
