laptop dvd drive issue

I've got a friend who has an ASUS m5200AE notebook and she is having a weird problem. All of a sudden her DVD drive is no longer being recognized by the BIOS. Not including opening it up and checking the connection, what could be wrong? The power to the drive still works fine, we can open it and the LED blinks like it should. But since the BIOS cannot detect it, neither can windows. I've updated the BIOS to no avail. Any ideas?

Probably a corrrupt dvd drive firmware. This is not too rare happening to cd and dvd drives really. Try downloading a fresh one from the manufacturer. Also run a registry repair / cleaner to make sure.
