Having trouble accessing old files after new install

My old PC crashed the other day and I just finished getting the new one up and running, when I went to access all my old documents I was locked out due to not having the necessary permissions. I have dealt with this several times before so I disabled simple file sharing and have taken ownership of the files. Now instead of giving me the old access is denied error, it just says "file not found" when I try to open media file or "no preview available" with pictures or when I try to access a .exe, it says "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have appropriate permissions to access them." If I go to the ownership tab under the advance options under the security tab, it says that I and all administrator's have ownership of the file, however, when I go to the effective permissions tab, it just says that I have read permissions and change permissions, but not ownership or anything else, what am I doing wrong?
