Carried over this from my other Thread...hope you' all ar ok with that..
Thanks guys, ran Memtest in 2 different Windows, split my available Memory in half, ran for 300%, 3 cycles, no errors.
Also, FYI, with Prime 95 I get a Core Temp of 54 C (using Core Temp)....stock coolers on my E8400. Dropped to 42 C when stopping Prime95
Would like to try and OC my E8400 (a tad, 3.2 to start and maybe 3.4) so:
Alright, bearing in mind that I have only a Stock Cooler on my E8400, I would like to experiment and see if I can get to 3.2, 3.4 in those steps.
Firstly ( I have my Evga Nforce 780i Manual out), in order to bump up my FSB speed I have to change the FSB - Mempry Clock Mode from Auto to:
A) Linked or
B) Unlinked ? Which would you suggest? (I'm happy with my Memory @ 800 Mhz (for now)
Now I can bump up my FSB speed correct (FSB /4 x CPU Multiplier (presently set to"9") = my new CPU Clock speed - correct?
Would it be safe to bump up my FSB speed from 1333 to 1444 /4 x Multiplier "9" = 3.2 Ghz?
The only things I have changed so far are my Memory Timings from 5-5-5-18 to 4-4-4-12 and changed the Memory Voltage from 1.85v to 2.05v, prior to changing the Memory Voltage my Rig would not boot up into windows. I did set it at 2.2v, but have since backed it off to 2.05v and things seem ok. @ the advise of previous Post.
I also bumped up my Mutiplier to 9X from 7x , as this is supposed to be the correct Setting for E8400 on 780i (7x was set in Auto I guess)
Update: OK ...went with "Unlinked"...didn't touch any Voltages and set FSB to 1430 Mhz / 4 x Multiplier "9" =3.21 Ghz....
Been running Prime 95 for a few hours...no errors. Core temp shows:
Core#0 58 - 61 C
Core#1 52 - 54 C
So far so good.....I just may become an OC junkie!! I know its no big deal (3.2) for you folks, but I just "discovered" what the BIOS has to offer recently, so its huge for me.....now...you think I'll be able to get to 3.4 without adjusting Voltages..?
Guess we'll see...
Next time I boot up I'll wrtie down my Voltages...CPU, SPP, FSB and Northbridge..

Alright...I am addicted to OC'ing....FSB @ 1520...E8400 @ 3.4 Ghz stock cooling, stock Voltages!
Definitley a great CPU...thanks Goranpa..it was your suggestion when I built this Rig!!
Cheers

Alright...tried it...1600 Mhz FSB @ "9" Multiplier = 3.6 Ghz, Stock Cooling n Stock Voltages...
Running Prime 95 Temps around 57 - 61 C both Cores
what do you think?
Thanks..as you can tell I'm quite new to this! But it is entertaining to play around!
Cheers

61C running Prime on a 3.4Ghz oc'ed cpu and on the stock cooler is good.
If you want a to oc further? I suggest you start to look for a better cooler though.
This is a nice one, and cheap too.

Glad you liked the cpu.

Another quick one, my Mempry Timings are now at 4-4-4-12 2T @ 2.1v. Memtest ran through 3 cycles (300%) with no errors, does anyone change to 2T to 1T, if so what are the results?
Thanks

The 1T command rate is faster. But is intended for 1 gig of RAM in the first place. If you are lucky, you can run 1T at a 2 gig set too. You can try set the CAS# to 4.5 or 5 if you can't run 1T command rate at the normal timings for your RAM. I can do it with my Corsair RAM.

Alright, I may try this...another thing I have noticed, hopefully you can provide some insight..
when I shut my Rig down I hear 1 long "diminishing" Beep as it turns off???
No other Beeps, just this particular one....no other issues that are obvious. Tried Googling the "1 Long Beep at shut-down" and only get a bunch of links to "PC 1 Long Beep followed by unexpected shut down.", this is only when I shut down, not restart and I'm not really sure if its coming from the MOBO or the 8800 GTX, possibly a low voltage alarm from the 8800 GTX as it loses power durng shut down?..
Any ideas or has anyone else also experienced this with 780i & 8800 GTX ?
Thanks

As no bad behaviour seems to be involved. I think your guess about a low voltage alarm could be the reason. The best where if someone else here, that have the same video card could confirm this of coarce.
Edit. I found some interesting things about that beep. Many 8800GTX cards seems to do this. No one knows for sure why? EVGA, have been notified and are working on this. But this is not a specific EVGA 8800GTX thing it seems. There are BFG 8800GTX's, and GTX's from other brands that beeps too.
Some thinks it have to do with certain psu / GTX combinations. But on the other hand. Who have the money and time to try out maybe like 3 to 5 different psu's maybe before you find one that does'nt make the card beep at shut down? If you don't have any problems when running the rig? I think you probably can live with the GTX beeping at shut down?

Thanks, I believe we both nailed it....I too spent sometime checking out other Forums to find it a common problem. Upon shut down, the the MOBO Power is killed a milli-second before the GPU is shut down, resulting the long squeeky mouse Beep....I emailed Evga Support to check and see if their is a Driver (MOBO / GPU) or BIOS Update fix.
My PSU is rock solid I believe, PC P& C 750W delivering 60A on single 12v Rail.
Anyhow, just so happened this Beep was first noticed after my Memory timing changes (bumping up Memory Voltage) and OC'ing....ugghh..I hate that!!!! Coincidance I guess. Got me nervous enough to bump my OC back down to 3.4 from 3.6 ,
Anyhow, lookslike I may just have to live with it...BTW...Crysis (defaulted to all "High" 16X) and runs / looks great, what a difference from my P4 3.2 Ghz / AGP 6800 GT combo!!
Thanks

Well ...here you go, just when we thought we had it figured out.....I re-set my CPU speed to 3.0 Ghz, Stock, Unlinked back to "Auto", now it shuts down with no Beeps!!
Could be something to do with OC'ing and leaving all of my Voltages on "Auto" ?? I figured best to leave the Voltages on Auto as I'm not sure what to set these at...anyhow...so much to learn!!!
But it is fun!

Well, computers are strange stuff lol. When you belive you have learned the most about them. There's always some new knowlege that pops up.
