Trying to downgrade to XP from Vista

My fiance just purchased a new gateway laptop, she is not to fond of Vista and wants to use XP. I put my XP install disk in, that I have used on more then one occasion and am sure is functional, when I went through the set up for XP it told me Windows XP Setup could not find any Hard Drives. The only thing I could think of for XP Setup to not find any Hard Drives would be if the hard drive(s) was SATA or Raid or needed some kind of driver from a floppy disk, if that is the case I would be in trouble being on a laptop, far as -I can see from Vista's device manager under (HDD Drive Name WDC etc...) Properties=>Details=>Property(Enumerator)=>Value(IDE) if that makes any sense. So I would assume anyway the laptops HDD would be IDE.

So I called Gateway Tech support and they basically told me if its not the operating system that came with the computer they won't help me and told me to call microsoft which was closed, so I figured I would see if anyone here had any sugestions.

You could just reformat the whole thing and then reinstall XP. I mean, if this laptop is new, there's little or no valuable data on it, right? Also, you'd probably get rid of all the shitty bloatware companies like Gateway put on their machines anyway, so it's win-win.

Should be no reason the HDD isn't detected by XP, but if I had to take a guess it might be that Vista already being installed had something to do with it. I'd say try reformatting and if XP still doesn't detect a hard drive, then reinstall Vista, and if that doesn't work either, then you can call Gateway and bitch to them until they agree to send you a machine that works. Might be a hassle, but at least you have a good chance of a) getting XP on it, b) getting rid of all the Gateway bloatware and having a clean Vista install or c) getting a whole new machine which would likely work better.

Gonna try to reformat from Vista start up disk, I tried a different XP Disk with the same problem. If I try to run the disk while vista is already loaded it tells me setup.exe doesn't work, meanwhile setup.exe runs fine on Windows XP and Linux via Wine.

I belive your going to need the sata drivers, for it to detect the harddrive. In that case you can either find a removable usb floppy driver. Or, create a XP disk stream lined with the nessacary drivers already on it.
