Questions...Questions and Even More Questions...

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hopefully Goranapa will be viewing this...!...Anyhow, since my new build...some questions...

1. Memory - I have been running 4 x 1GB sticks Crucial Ballistix Tracer 4-4-4-12 1T @ 2.1v. No apparant problems, Post fine in BIOS and System seems to be stable (no crashes). I'm wondering, does 4 x 1GB sticks within the 780i MOBO slow down the PC (I've read this in Forums) and, can I optmize XP 32 Bit to recognize at least 3.0 GB? When I go to My Computer/Properties/System it states only 2.75GB. I have read that some folks are actually getting it to recognize 3 GB....is thier something I should be tweaking in my XP / Nforce 780i configuration for my System to recognize 3 GB of the 4 GB installed? Also, in my BIOS there is an option to "enable" SLI Memory, I presently have this disabled as I was under the impression that this was for Memory greater than 800 Mhz....can you clarify?

2. Nforce Drivers - I purchased this MOBO about 6 weeks ago (Direct Canada - $245), the Driver disc that came with it states (on the disc) Version 79.1 NF780i SLI....it confuses me that the the most recent Nforce Driver is version 9.46.....how the heck does this relate to the version on my Disc? (79.1)...I understand that on the Nforce Driver disc their are several Drivers, such as Ethernet, Audio, SATA, RAID etc.....Should I be updating my Nforce MOBO Drivers? If so...how is this procedure done? As like Graphics Drivers do I have to go to each individual Driver and uninstall it, run Driver Cleaner (select Nforce) and then run an "Install" of the entire Nforce Driver file?

3. BIOS - Flashing and Updating - my present BIOS for my 780i MOBO (Evga) is (via Everat Version 2.2) : Type - Phoenix Award BIOS v6.00PG, Award BIOS Message - (7B1N1P02) 132-CK-NF78
Presently the newest BIOS version is P03...should I be attempting to Flash this new BIOS?

Is thier a possibility that the new MOBO Drivers / BIOS Drivers would enable me to OC my E8400 without getting the "Beep" at shut down (previous Threads) ?

Anyhow, for what its woth, I ran 3D Mark 05 with my present System and got just under 19,000 (not sure how that matches up to other Rigs) and Crysis / Bioshock play great. Presenty playing Crysis @ 1280 x 1024, High Settings, 8X AA..very smooth!!

Hope you can onswer some of these queries......Thankas again for everyones support over the past few years! BTW...This is a great System!!!! The only thing I wold change is the Case. My Raidmax Smilidon is very chic, but the 80mm fans are a bit loud, not obnoxiously loud, but I think soething with 120mm Fans would be a bit quieter...perhaps the Antec 900

1. XP recognizes only max 3 gig of RAM. Sorry man! As for the "SLI RAM" setting I have'nt got a clue. I dont have that in my mobo bios. Consult the mobo manual first, and see if you find out anything about it there?

2. Your mobo have the latest chipset. And don't count on that Nvidia, names their drivers in a logical way. They have a tendecy to jump back and forth a bit. Besides, dont try to fix stuff that is working. It's enough to update the chipset driver every 6:th month or so.

3. The same thing goes for the bios. The latest bios does'nt have to be the best oc bios. I have tried a couple of the latest bioses for my Gigabyte mobo. But have realized the one that came with the mobo works beautyfully. So I really dont feel obliged to try another one. But of coarce, if that beep is irritating you? Then try a new bios and see if it helps?

Around 19000 points is very nice I think.

Don't worry so much about stuff! The main thing is that your rig works very well, and can handle the games and stuff to your liking.

Do not become a benchmark junkie! I have seen guys around different forums that is swapping hardware once a month or so. Just because someone else have higher benchmark points. Sorry boys! There ALWAYS will be someone that's faster....Just like in the wild west.

The benchie junkies, have forgot the fact that it is in normal gaming / computing your rig should shine. Not in some silly benchmark, that bombards the cpu and video card with data in a way that no normal program or game does. Not even bloody Crysis.

You could replace the intake 80mm fans with Noctua 80mm fans. The intake fans does'nt have to be that powerful.

That should at least make the case somewhat more silent.

The Antec Nine hundred is a very nice case. But if you are looking for silent computing? Get an Antec P182 case and swap the Antec fans for Nexus or Noctua 120mm fans.

Thanks...I know I know...if its not broke, why fix it! I just installed FEAR ( I remember how it ran on my old Rig), able to set Resolution to 1152 x 864 (?) ....funny I remember no 1280 x 1024 unless you go into some funky set-up, anyhow, all settings at Max, including Soft Shadows and ran the Test. Lowest FPS 69. Highest FPS approx. 200, Average FPS 130'ish...damn fast indeed!!!

Now.....should my next upgrade be another 8800 GTX in SLI? Wonder if my 750W PSU will be adequate....

Thanks again Goranpa...

Posted by: goranpaa

It's strange with that resoloution. Could depend on the driver though. Did you uninstall the present video card driver before installing a new one?

Well, with those fps in FEAR at max settings you can't really complain lol.

An SLI setup with 8800 GTX cards needs from what I have heard, a 600W psu minimum with 34A on the +12V rail(s) So you don't have to worrie. But wait and see how the new, 9800GX2 behaves in the tests first. If you really feel you need an upgrade of the video card soon that is?

Btw, if you decide to flash a new mobo bios? Remember to reset the old bios to defaults before flashing. Do not have any oc on!

You're welcome.

I forgot to say before, That if you are going SLI? Swap out that case first. I doubt it have enough cooling ability for 2 x 8800GTX cards.

You have to excuse me for babbeling about. But I have been up for 19 hours now. And the clock is 06:30 here. So my brain does'nt work at full capasity for the moment....If it ever does lol.

Posted by: rjbarker

Yes I agree, the 8800 GTX Cards certainly run a lot warmer than my old 6800GT. Idle Temps are around 54 degrees and 74 degrees under load!

Right now as I type this I have once agaon tried an OC on my E8400. All settings at Auto except "Unlinked" and FSB set at 1515 Mhz (multiplier x9). = 3.4 Ghz

Been running Prime 95 Torture Test for about an hour...no errors.
CoreTemp shows temperaturse for both Cores between 57 to 63 degrees.

Would like to leave it here, but there's that annoying "Beep"...hahaha

Have a good snooze their friend!!

Posted by: goranpaa

I had a good days sleep lol. Now I'm back in black again. Whaaa haa haaa!

What does core temp say about your cpu load temp, when not running Prime?

Posted by: rjbarker

Funny it never fluctuates much, always say 42 degrees? Thats idle no "activity". This 42 degrees doesn't change either whether I'm running Stock 3.0 Ghz or OC to 3.4 Ghz.

Also, CPUID HW Monitor reflects the same Core Temps. 42 degrees Idle (both Cores). Odd that this doesn't change much? Also, CPUTIN Temps 33 degrees

As for Nvidia Monitor I've pretty much given up on the info that it provides. All of my Voltages are "Red" whether OC'ing or not.

Temps in Nvidia Monitor : CPU 33 degrees, System 29 degrees....

Posted by: goranpaa

The Nvidia monitor is crap just like NTune.

If you wanna have further check on the temps? Download Nextsensor. It even shows the chipset temp. And it's accurate....At least if I compaire it to what the mobo bios says about the cpu and case temp.

http://cbid.amdclub.ru/html/download.html

Posted by: rjbarker

Downloaded installed NextSensor,
vCore 1.2v
Processor 34 degrees (doesn't display temps of Core A & B)
Aux (?) 32.5 degrees
HDA - HDD 28 degrees
GPU 55 degrees (idle)
Northbridge 191.00 ( can these be correct?)

Cheers

Posted by: goranpaa

Naah! Then the northbridge would be a melted lump. The other temps could be correct though.

It could be, that the Nextsensor is too old for your chipset. The 780i chipset is after all the latest one. This could also be why you get different readings in the other programs. Your mobo is simply too new. Run your rig for a while. Then boot into bios and check the temps.

Btw, didi'nt you get any monitor program on the mobo cd?

Posted by: rjbarker

No....no Monitoring Program that I can see, just SATA RAID stuff, Audio Drivers, Ethernet etc and of Adobe Reader

When I minimize the Temps to show in my Menu Bar (Lower right), the Northbridge Temp says 19 degrees vs 191.1 in the regular Program Window...

Anyhow, installed FEAR as well, WOW, everything (including Soft Shadows enabled) set to Highest AF to 4x and AA to 16x, when I run the the "Test Settings" option, huge FPS, average around 90.

Too bad I have to set Vsinc on as too much screen tearing...limited to 75 Hz = 75 FPS....

This system really rocks!!
Even the onboard Audio Realtek HD is very good! But of course , now, 1 month after purchasing all components, their is now the Evga 790i MOBO and the Evga 9800 GX2...uuuggghh, and of course the Yorkie CPU's!

If a guy was to stay on top of this stuff, he would be building a new Rig at least eevry 6 months.

The 780i MOBO does support SLI 16x PCI E 2.0, but unfortunately my new 8800 GTX is not version 2.0!

Oh well, it rocks...gotta pay this damn thing off now...!

You anywhere near Gothenburg? Met some gorgeous Swedish ladies back in 1984, while travelling in Australia, they were both from Gothenburg...good Hockey country, I can relate!!

cheers!

Your rig seems to be very good!

I also hate using VSync. But for some games you have to use it unfortunatly.

Yeah, if one wanna keep up with the latest stuff you will have to have a really solid echonomy! Or live on noodles and water most of the time.

But I think ( Or at least I'm trying to convince myself lol.) That as long as my rig can play the latest games on high settings and smoothly I'm happy. My mobo is near the dinosaur league after little over a year, (Nforce 650i chipset) But Gigabyte, releases bios updates that supports the latest Intel cpu's still.

PCI E 2.0 does'nt make any important performance difference compaired to PCI E 16X. You will have to benchmark to see any minor difference at all really.

The 8800 cards is soon half obsolete too I'm afraid. But still manages very well though.

But if you are looking for the best bang for buck video card of today? Then the 9600GT is unbeatable. Just 10% slower than the 8800GT and pretty cheap.

I love the old days, when you could upgrade every second or third year and be happy about it.

Now, you are looking at the best, every 1 1/2 year. At least when it comes to cpu's and video cards.

I'm born in Gothenburg actually. But lives near Malmoe ( Malmö), in the county of Skåne in the southern part of Sweden.

Yeah, the girls here are very nice lol.

We have some good hockey players. But most of them goes to Canadian or the US leagues very quickly.

You have Mats Sundin in the Maple leafs for ex. He have been playing there for for a very long period.

And of course (as on my Avatar), Vancouver Canucks (just a short 1 hr Ferry ride from my home)...lets see..

Henrik and Daniel Sedin
Mats Naslund
Sami Salo
Alexander Edler
Mathias Ohlund

To name a few....too bad thier liklely not going to make the play-offs this year!

Cheers

Posted by: rjbarker

oopps...not Mats Nasulnd...what was I thinking...

Markus Naslund

!!!

Posted by: goranpaa

Yeah, him too. And the Sedin brothers in Vancouver.
