To Partition or Not To Partition HDD?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: rjbarker

Yep, another question. I noticed that my 320 GB Seagate Barrucuda is not Partitioned. Would it have been better for my HDD to have been Partitioned when the System was built? My old Rig was Partitioned and I used to keep my Paging File on the Partition separate from my OS.

Is it possible or recommended to Partition the HDD after the OS has been installed and a few games?

Cheers

You could split the hdd in 2 partitions. Have the operating system on a 30 gig partition, or slightly bigger. Then the games and other stuff on the second one. Maybe even make a third, 5 gig patition for the page files.

The best way to make a new partiton on an allready used hdd. Is to use Partiton Magic. I think there is a trial of that software you can download.

Downloaded the Trial, but it is only a Trial. Its $40, figured their maybe a way to Partition without spending $40....
Didn't realize it was a Trial Only unitl I hit the "Apply" button and the "Trail Version only ....pay $40 for the complete ..yada yada yada..."
Oh well...perhaps if I Defrag often I can keep it "clean"..
Thanks though

You could try http://gparted.sourceforge.net/index.php

It's a linux boot cd with only a partition manager on it. I've used it to resize partitions, to make room for a second one.

WARNING: Back up your data before trying this. It work for me on numerous occasions, but since it is open source and linux. I do not know how it will react with your system, and do will not claim responsibility if it hose's you system. Although it should be safe.

Thanks, but think I'll pass. As this is a very new build and I'm thinking of adding another HDD, I'll likley Reformat and do a Clean Install, at which time I'll Partition accordingly!

Cheers

Its alright no worries, I think I'll be ordering another HDD (Western Digital Raptor 150GB) over the next few weeks anyhow, then Format the Seagate Barracuda 320 GB and set up a coulpe of Partitions, re-install.
I believe I can get the Raptor from Direct Canada for about $225 CDN, hey, thats about 225 US..Right on!!

Thanks guys!

Hm, it retails for 199.99 in the US. At least in Best Buy it does.
WD Raptor 150GB WD1500ADFD USD$169.99:

This is the one that retails in the US Best Buy stores for USD$199.99 on NewEgg for USD$179.99:

The problem with ordering south of the border is additional Shipping charges, including Customs, yada yada yada, and of course Shipping Time frame!

Through Direct Canada (based out of Vancouver), I get Free Shipping and it will be delivered to my door within 48 Hrs of ordering, cannot beat it!!

So, the with that said, the additional $40 - $50 is a "no brainer". You ever heard of the cliche "Pinch pennies and watch the dollars sail by"...hahahah

Thanks anyhow....
Oh, and that is an ongoing battle between consumers and Retailers in this Country. Back when the the Green Back was equal to about CDN $1.40, Reatilers were able to jack up prices from everything coming from the States and of course the exchange rate was the reasoning.
Cars, Computer Parts, even Magazines.

A few months ago, when the CDN$ was equal to $1.08 US, consumers were screaming because the excuse was no longer valid, however, prices of US goods had not been lowered.

In other words, a simple thing like local Car Dealerships were / are stinging, because you simply took your CDN$ south of the Border and not only got $1.08 on the buck, but took advantage of the deflated prices to begin with!

Now it looks about par....so all is good!

Thats my 2 bits worth hahaah

Hm, okay. I thought that might be an issue. I've ordered things from over seas and had some interesting problems myself (so I know how ya feel). At any rate, I tried checking Future Shop and Best Buy's Canadian sites, but it appears they don't carry the Raptor in Canada. Haha.

Like I said, Direct Canada is essentially the cheapest place to get Components and its based out of Vancouver, which is very close to my home...
This is the sight.

I did pretty good with this build through them, (check Signature), essentially all items came to around CDN $1900.

I still may go with a 2nd Seagate Barracuda HDD vs the Raptor for a number of reasons:
1. 7200 @ SATA2 3GB's/sec 16Mb Cache- the thing seems extremely fast!
2. Its the most quiet HDD I've ever owned.
3. 320GB for $80, dirt cheap.

Anyhow, the Raptors seem to be the rage, but a little concerned with noise / heat. I'll decide at some point......funy eh, things a brand new build, but just gotta spend more!!

I'm happy with my Raptor, it's not too noisy actually. Only when doing HDD intensive things like gaming and such, but I can't hear it over moderate volume levels for music or whatever is going on at the time. My external drives are actually louder (probably because the casing for those doesn't absorb as much sound).

And heat doesn't seem to be too much worse than an average drive.

i love my raptor. It isn't load till you run a search. Then you can feel the the power of it, some times i shed a tear it sounds so nice.

Maybe one day I'll go the "Raptor" route, but I think I'll wait until "WD" does a little "modernization", presently, from comparisons that I've seen with the newest Barracuda 7200x running SATA 2 @ 3 GB/s, I cannot justify the "old technology" and extra $$$ for a Raptor Drive.

The difference in cost here in Canada

Raptor 150 GB - $225
Barracuda 320 GB SATA 2 3 GB/s - $90

As you can see, a significant difference, is performance really justified?

Glad you folks are happy with them, perhaps it will be part of a future upgrade for my Rig!

Cheers

If I where you, I would get one of the smaller Raptors. And have the operating system and games installed on that drive. Then, have other programs that does'nt need / benefit much from the higher speed the Raptor provides on your Seagate instead.
