Still Playing Around With OC'ing E8400 / 780i

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi all,
Still playing around with OC'ing my E8400 / Evga 780i MOBO (and Evga 8800GTX GPU)....here's where I'm at so far:
In BIOS
System Clocks
Multiplier 9x
CPU N/2 Ratio "Disabled"
PCIe x 16_3 100 Mhz
SPP / MCP Ref Clock 200 Mhz

Spread Spectrum Settings
HT Spread Spectrum "Disabled"
PCIe Spread Spectrum (MCP) "Disabled"
SATA Spread Spectrum "Disabled"

FSB & Memory Config
SLI-Ready Memory - "Disabled"
FSB Memory Clock Mode "Linked"
FSB Memory Ratio "Sync Mode"
FSB (QDR) 1515 Mhz
Actual Memory (DDR) 757.5 Mhz
Memory Timings "Expert"
4-4-4-12 1T Command Rate @2.15v

CPU Config
Limit CPUID Max Val "Disabled"
Intel Speed Step "Disabled"
CPU Thermal Control "Disabled"
C1E Enhanced Halt State "Disabled"
Execute Disable Bit "Enabled"
Virtualization Tech "Enabled"

System Voltage
CPU Core 1.35v
CPU FSB "Auto" 1.3v
Memory 4-4-4-12-1T @ 2.15v
Nforce SPP "Auto" 1.4v
Nforce MCP "Auto" 1.5v
HT Nforce SPP/MCP "Auto" 1.2v
Nforce MCP Aux "Auto" 1.5v

GTLVRef Lane 0-3 "Auto" + 00mV

Thats it, presently OC'd @ 3.42 Ghz, however Stock Cooling. I have been running Prime 95 version 25.6 Torture Test "Small FFT" for 2 hrs.
No errors
Temps on both Cores between 62 - 67 degrees
* Will be definitely putting in some sort of AfterMarket Cooler, inquiring as what will fit on my 780i Board and within my Raidamx Smilidon Case.

8800 GTX OC Settings:
GPU Clock 615 Mhz
Memory 2.0 Ghz Combined
Shader 1.439 Ghz
Idle Temp 51 degrees
Load Temp (Crysis) 69 degrees

* Notes:
1. Memory Speed is 800 Mhz, but it is running at speed 757.5 Mhz
Likley due to being Linked / Sync'd, also I am running 4 x 1GB Sticks in XP SP2
2. Still get the "Long Diminishing Beep" from my 8800 GTX whan I "Shut Down" - the only way I have been able to correct this is by setting everything (excluding 8800 Clock Speeds) back to Stock Speeds.
3. Haven't run 3DMark 06, however 3D Mark 05 is just over 20,000 (unsure how this compares to others)

Thats it.....any "input" is welcomed....

Cheers

I think the first thing you should do is to get a good cpu cooler.

Here are some suggestions:

The Scythe Zipang, looks somewhat like a remake of the horizontal Thermalright heatsinks. But the Zipang is better. Here, you also have massive cooling of the mobo components around the cpu socket. 138mm fan!

Good heatsink that also blows slightly downwards cooling stuff on the mobo at the same time.
But check mobo compability at Scythe home first.

This is a cheap cooler. But still one of the better:

Not quite as good as the Scythe Katana 2 though. But still definte better than the Intel stock cooler. Differ about 4-5 c between the Freezer and the Katana 2.

Yes I know, presently looking at Zalman 9700 ($60 Direct Canada), but the big thing is what will fit on my MOBO and within my Case???

Could just order and hope for the best, if it doesn't fit could RMA...

The Scythes will be better.

But if you want a cooler with some eye candy? The the Zalman 9700 is a good choise.
Fits most mobo's and cases, providing the case is a mid or fulltower. Your Smilodon is a pretty big case if I remember correctly?

Ok, I just ordered this
http://www.directcanada.com/product...e=ZALMAN%20TECH

Sorry, didn't paste as a link??

Anyhow, knowing DC, will likley be here tomorrow or the day after.
Did a little bit of researching and it seems some folks have had luck with this within Raidmax Smilidon Cases. Hard to find the exact combo - Raidmax Smilidon Case + Egva 780i MOBO + PC P&C 750W (all items presently affecting space within).
Hopefully it works alright and reduces my Temps by about 5-8 degrees.......at that point I'll be OC'ing to 3.6 and call it "done"!

Just have to live with the "BeeP" when I shut down!

Take care

I'm convinced the 9700 will fit. Have'nt heard anyone with a decently sized midtower case that could'nt house it.

I looked a bit more into the "8800GT, beep problem" but just as before. Some people with the GTX have the beeps, And there does'nt seem to be any fix for it....not yet at least.

It's pretty much the same, as the aa bug problem with some 8800GT's and the 512mb GTS. No real soloution yet.

Yes I pretty much gave up n the "Beep".....if it bugs me enough I can always set my Clocks to Stock..then it "goes away"!

Another Forum that I'm presently involved in.....the only other PC Forum....is
http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/
Not sure if you have found this one or not, but very good!! Most folks on thier are middle aged folks whom have a "passion" for their Rigs.....not a lot of "kids".
I find between this Forum and that one, I don't have to spend much time searching other forums for solutions.
A number of folks on the other Forum have also cut-in with "I have the Beep too".....so their you go!

I don't like to harp on Benchmarks, but (for your own information.....as it seems we can never get enough of it)......OC'ing my Rig using "Linked and Sync'd" and manually chosing a Voltage for the vCore (as apposed to using "Auto"), was slower than chosing "Unlinked" and selecting "Auto" for vCore.

Take Care....today is a good day as the Canucks (Vancouver) beat Calgary last night, they have 3 games left and just may squeak into the Playoffs!

Seems like a nice forum really. Is it for Canadians only?

Hmm, interesting. I have'nt thought about this really.

Oh? So the Canucks are marching up the league? Very nice!

Have a fine day now!

Today, It's the day of suspicion here in Sweden. The 1:st of april, is the "April fool's day" here when people are trying to pull eachothers leg as good as they can by tradition. Even the media.

I remember back when the colour TV whas a new thing here. Then, in the 1:st of april. The TV news pulled a prank, saying that if one stretched a nylon stocking over the tv screen you would get colour on a black and white set Rofl!

There where even people, who had phoned the TV / radio shops saying they could'nt get this stocking trick to work and wanted help to fixing this lol. I'll guess, that the staff at those shops had quite many laughs that day.

the zalman 9700 its really nice, not that big though and it is a pain in the ass to install. Direction are easy but when u screw it in u have to use a LOT of force and don't skid ur mobo. Heat up ur pc before u remove the old heat sink. Also the thermal grease that comes with the 9700 is so beast. I think you will be very satisfied.

Posted by: rjbarker

yeah I've been reading on installation, sounds like a pain, just hope it fits alright and gets my Temps reasonable for a 3.8 OC!

Here's one for ya...considering April Fools...way back when I was a young lad, living in Winnipeg (Winterpeg), back befiore cordless handsets. My Mom had heard on the local radio station that the Telephone Company was going to be cleaning out all of the Telephone Lines throughout the city. They advised that everyone should place plastic bags over the telephone handsets to prevent all that dust from blowing out of the handsets into the house....................................well.................................

........we had two telephones back then, one upstairs and one downstairs and of course when I came home from school I asked...."Mom....why are their plastic bags on the telephones held on with rubber bands?".............Yep, April Fools Day, even here in Canada!!!

Cheers
Folks

Time to go shake things up in Bioshock,,,,,,what a great game!!

Rofl! Nice April fools joke!

And I'm off helping a lady friend mounting a 9600GT 512mb. Guess she will notice quite a difference from the 7600GT she got. Then it's gaming time for me too. The Witcher!
