I am having problems playing Diablo II: Expansion again. Whenever I exit a game, my computer would freeze.
Is there anyway I can fix this?
Please help. Thanks for the people who can at least try.
I am currently using:
* Windows ME
* AMD Athlon 1GHz
* nVidia GeForce2 MX-400
* SB Live! Value
* 128MB RAM
* Hitachi DVD-Rom
My computer has all the updated drivers.
Thanks!

From what I could find out on this they say to Uninstall and reinstall Diablo
How to uninstall Diablo:
Click on "Start"
Click on "Settings"
Click on "Control Panel"
Double-click on "Add/Remove programs"
Select "Diablo" and click on "Remove"
Uncheck the box "also delete saved games" (if you want to keep your saved games) and click "Remove"
Select "Battle.net" and click on "Remove"
How to install Diablo:
Insert the Diablo CD, the auto play screen should appear.
Select "Install and Play Diablo"
If the Auto play screen does not pop up, double-click on the "My Computer" icon
Double-click on the CD icon
Double-click on the Setup icon
The install program will then give you directions on how to install.
Hope this helps.

the fact that you have winME and only 128 megs of ram kinda jumps out. both ME and d2 are ram hogs. probably not related to your problem however.
Posted by: Just1nCase
Okay, Ill try it out.
By the way, I am planning to get two sticks of 256MB Ram. Will that fix it?

Go here and try these troubleshooting tips they might help.

Alright, Ill try out.
Thanks for the link too!
Posted by: Just1nCase
Well, I tried re-installing but no luck.
Anymore suggestions?

there are programs that monitor your resources. memwatch is a shareware, there are others out there. have one running while you just have your system (no games) running. see how your cpu and ram are used. fiddle with normal stuff and continue to monitor it.
check and see if the problem occurs in single player offline also. when you say freeze, do you mean you have to reset your comp? or does just d2 freeze? if the latter, then you can run a resource manager during this and see if that is the problem.
but d2 online requires 64megs. im sure you know what me requires, either 64 or 128. if you add in all the background stuff you have running, it certainly could be the ram. you need an expert on win me for more help tho.

I read another post somewhere on another site and he had the same problem. He indicated that he fixed it by getting the latest VIA 4in1.
Not sure if your motherboard uses VIA chipset but if it does you should try getting the latest VIA 4in1 drivers.
Posted by: Just1nCase
Tweaker,
Ohhhhhhhh... Maybe that will work... Because my motherboard uses VIA Chipset. I let you know if it works or not.
----
redwrench,
The game would freeze and I would have to reset my computer. Do you know where I can get that program?

Posted by: redwench
unfortunately no. but there are a number of shareware resource monitors. im sure someone here knows where one is.
laggy?

I got some questions before I install the latest VIA 4in1.
**Will this VIA 4in1 won't mess up my computer?
I dont want to mess up computer because I already formatted it many times.
**How do I know if I have VIA 4in1 installed?
**How do I know if I have the latest one? START > RUN > msinfo32? Where do I go after that?
Thanks if you can answer theses questions.

I found this to help you click here
The 4in1's are made up of different drivers and are updated at different times. An updated 4in1 driver version might reflect an update in all or just 1 driver. The way to determine which version of a driver you have is to access the device manager>double click the component>driver tab. You can also go by the driver's release date.
Hope this helps.
Posted by: Just1nCase
Well, I already have the latest VIA 4-in-1 driver and still it doesn't work.
Is ASUSPROBE one of the programs where you can monitor your memory usage?
*If it is, then I'll install that one because that program came with the motherboard.

Justincase, are you sure you have the updated drivers for that sound card?
Check to be sure.
drivers
Posted by: Just1nCase
Yes, I am sure.
I was thinking it was my CD-Rom because it would always make a loud noise when it reads a CD. The CD-Rom I am using right now is a Hitachi DVD-Rom GD-7500.
Hopefully this will work.

Alright.
By the way, my CD-Rom can't read some cds. Ummmm...
Posted by: Just1nCase
Oh yeah, a new VIA 4-in1 driver just came out...
4in1 4.36v
...Maybe that new VIA 4-in-1 driver will solve this problem but I am afriad this driver might mess up the computer instead of helping it....
Should I install this driver? Any suggestions?
Posted by: Just1nCase
Nevermind, that chipset is not compatiable to my motherboard because this chipset is only for Apollo.
Ummm... What else can be the problem?
I still planning to get a new CD-Rom. Whats a good realiable brand of CD-Roms or Burners?
Thanks!

You mentioned before that you thought it might be the cd itself, did you exchange it?
Here is a good site to check out, there are some nice affordable ones listed. Check it out!

burners are priced quite nicely right now. even the top speeds are under 200. try a plextor, tdk, or hp.

No, I did not exchange it because I can't find my reciept.
.. But I did try installing my friend's CD of Diablo II: Expansion but I did the same thing..
Posted by: Tweaker
Lets try a few things here:
I know this is a long list but give some of these things a try and see if it helps.
Disable all forms of power management (Right click on desktop, Properties, Screensaver, Settings, set the turn offs and the standby to “never” – while you’re in screensaver set it to none). Disable power management in your PC Bios as well (reboot, press Delete until you see the Bios, put in the password if you have one, find the power management section and ensure power management is disabled, save and exit – reboot)
Run the Direct X tests. Start, Run, type dxdiag, press Enter, go through the tabs and look at the reports at the bottom, run the sound and video tests, update any drivers it suggests at component manufacturers website. (If in doubt try www.drivershq.com )
Disable all the potential conflicts that come with ME, such as all scheduled tasks in Start, Programs, Accessories, System tools, Scheduled tasks, by using the properties box on each task (right click to get it). Remove Universal Plug and Play if it is installed (Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add Remove Programs, Windows Setup, Communications, Details, uncheck the box). This is a program which is designed to tell your central heating etc to start in Microsoft future world, but what it does is call home on the internet, so it can conflict with lots of things. Don't let Norton (or equivalent utilities or anti-virus programs) run any scheduled tasks - when installing Systemworks 2001 or equivalent, tell it that you will do all your tasks manually, except for virus autoscan. Note that Norton 2000 is not compatible with ME.
Disable active desktop, it uses resources (right click on the desktop, active desktop, make sure the web content line is unchecked). Don’t use wallpaper while troubleshooting (right click desktop, properties, background, set wallpaper to “none”).
If you have Office installed disable Findfast (first go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Find Fast, delete the indexes, look in the menus and uncheck “run at startup”. Next get out your Office CD 1 and in the maintenance mode of the setup program go to Office Tools and make Find Fast unavailable.) Disable the Office toolbar while troubleshooting if you use it. It causes some conflicts. Make sure you have service releases 1a and 2.0 installed if you are using Office 2000 with ME.
Disable unnecessary programs in startup by going to Start, Run, type msconfig press enter, go to Startup tab, uncheck any unnecessary programs, especially PCHealth, Load power profile (usually there twice), Scheduling agent, anything that mentions scheduling. Look at two sites for more on this: http://www2.whidbey.net/djdenham/Uncheck.htm and http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm
Update all device drivers to the newest ME compatible versions from the manufacturers’ websites. (If in doubt try www.drivershq.com )
If all this hasn’t solved your problem, update VIA chipset patches at http://www.viatech.com/jsp/en/dr/driver.jsp

Thanks for the info..
I just installed ASUS Probe to see how much my computer usage of the memory and I found out that I am already using almost all of my memory just surfing th web and any ordinary stuff.
MEMORY LOAD: 94%
PHYSICAL MEMORY USUAGE: 99%
Virtual Memory: 3%
Paging File Usage: 6%
Maybe that could be the problem. By the way, I used my friend's CD-ROM and still doesn't work. I havent tried re-installing Diablo II: Expansion in his CD-ROM but his CD-ROM is messed up too.
So maybe if I buy new memory, this might solve this problem.. Dont you think so? I am planning to get (2) 256s of RAM.

I am planning to get it this weekend. So might be a while.
Posted by: Tweaker
Ok, post back after you install it.
Posted by: Just1nCase
Well, I just brought 1 stick of 256 SDRAM.
It would exit the game but when I quit from Battle net, it frooze. This happened right after I installed it.
After I restarted the computer, it doesnt want to exit the game. I was thinking to reinstall it. Should I or it would do the samething?
Thanks & Happy Holidays!

Anyways, I re-installed it and it still doesnt work.
Oh well... I think it was there new patch that cause this. Umm.... What else should I do?

Well, it finally works. I just had to unistall a program.
The program was Daemon Virtual CD Program.
Here is the letter I got from Blizzard:
Quote:
Hi,
You are using the Daemon Virtual cd program. This program if installed, will cause the lockups upon exiting the game. Please
uninstall this program and try it. We are only able to offer support when you use the original cd in the drive while playing.
