U.S. Gets Tough on Warez

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

As part of an international effort on Tuesday, the United States cracked down on illegal software distribution. The U.S. Customs service seized computers in 27 cities in an attempt to gather information on people involved with warez-oriented web sites. 37 warrants were served in the U.S, along with 19 warrants in other countries.

More details can be found at Yahoo News, or at CNN.com.

Burn em' at the stake!!!

They're getting what they deserve. I'm kind of curious, though.. Yahoo News reports about 50 warrants executed, while the government claims 100 were executed on CNN. Wonder how many it really was... but the CNN article is more in-depth, so I think I'll trust it for now...

Are these people just distributing them or just people with warez?

Posted by: Shalome

I would imagine that the warrants could be served to anyone involved with warez.. whether you ran the website, uploaded the warez, or downloaded the warez... any way you look at it, it's involvement with an illegal activity.

Why do you ask, SKHYN? Worried?

Not really. I wouldnt download a warez of a site anyways, thats what file sharing progs are for. But the only ones I have anyways are Old Dos games.

It's pretty easy to track down warez sites, especially the most popular ones ... using your favorite search engine usually brings up at least a thousand or so (mingled along with porn sites).

The problem is, several of the servers hosting those warez sites are located outside the US, most prominently in Russia and other European countries ... unless the US can have "more" jurisdiction over those, overseas warez sites will have a feeding frenzy coz they're untouchable...

SKYHN is right. Going after warez sites is a waste of time. As long as Peer to Peer services are allowed to exchange copyrighted material without restriction, no one needs warez sites anyway.

Heh.

I wonder.

I do happen to operate software which I did not pay for.

None of it was downloaded, however.

You could always install Linux on your other PC's

Heh. Well, it's more than just *cough* both my operating systems *cough*.

........

And I like my system configuration at the moment. If I do decide to install Linux at any point, I'm going to drop my XP partition to do it. And hey, there's one less piece of pirated software installed on my computer.

Is that a half step in the right direction?

Who knows?

hmmm this is quite disturbing for someone that hasnt bought a Os since win 3.1....they start with the websites... I think the next targets with be the file sharing programs. I doubt it will be very successful... seeing how napster went down(are they still around?), and a billion clones popped up. Oh well... these people need to do something to protect their products.

Free Napster is dead, but they are supposedly bringing a pay service out. I might actually get the pay service if the music on it is quality. Any music I download now is either low quality or has skipping in it because the person that converted it to mp3 used a sucky encoder.

Heres all the file sharing progs I sometimes use or used to use:

Kazaa(My favorite one and most used)
Morpheus(not anymore, same as kazaa anyways)
Hot Client(I dunno how to use this, its weird)
AudioGalixie Satelite(I dont like this one)
Bearshare(dont use it anymore cuz of all the spyware)
Limewire
iMesh

I would have to say that napster is tied with Kazaa with the best ones I have ever used.

I heard about something called "WinMX" yet I cannot find it anywhere, anyone know where it is or what it is?

Real warez don't come off of sites or sharing progs...amateurs...
