Microsoft to track Interactive TV viewers

In a deal signed with Microsoft on Tuesday, Predictive Networks agreed to incorporate profiling software into Microsoft's interactive TV platform.

Through the partnership, Microsoft said it will incorporate Predictive's software into its ITV operating system to create profiles based on subscribers' viewing habits--but without collecting personally identifiable data. The viewer profiles are used to target advertising, match and recommend programming, and conduct market research.

"The biggest uphill battle is to show the value to consumers by avoiding the perception that consumer privacy is compromised," said Adam Sarner, an analyst at research company Gartner.

The biggest issue here seems to be privacy. I can already name several large groups of people who will be up in arms over this - either because they feel their privacy compromised or because they feel the need to challenge Microsoft at every turn.

However (and as the article mentions), having very specific information as to the viewing habits of customers opens up the floodgates for huge advertising deals. Are we seeing Microsoft trying to break in to yet another market?

Ugh....I think Microsoft should get into the toilet paper industry. That way corporate america could wipe Bill Gate's butt while kissing it.

I imagine that the data will be sold to interested parties. Hmmmm, should we be getting paid for allowing our data to be used?
