Hacking the XBox!

This article brings to mind the old Tim Allen skit ("...so I REWIRED IT!") about livening up household appliances. Apparently, the capabilities of the XBox aren't enough for some enterprising people. They've taken it upon themselves to make improvements:

"It's a very powerful piece of hardware--that's what motivates us," said Dan Johnson, a high school senior from Sugarland, Texas, and creator of XboxHacker, a Web site dedicated to disseminating the latest information on Xbox tweaks. "It has the potential to do so much else. We can write lots of programs eventually to really exploit this thing."

From switching out cables to cracking into the BIOS, these people are trying their hardest to improve upon Microsoft's design. Full story at CNET/Yahoo News.

Just goes to show if there is the will they will find a way!

Looks like Microsoft doesn't like this:

At Xbox Hacker it appears that the souls are having to tread carefully because Microsoft Security is getting very interested in the steps they've already made.

The forum on the site tells of people who have managed to read data from Xbox hard drives, and make inroads into the BIOS.

But people placing files for download at Web sites have been asked very nicely not to make such files available.
