One of the members over at the The-CAD ended up being one of the unlucky that happened to get their PC raided by the FBI. He details some of the experience he had to endure. Here's a snip:
They seized all my possessions:
2 Computers and multiple non-functioning pcs and parts
3000 CDs and floppy disks (collected through out 20+ years)
50+ VHS tapes (all over 10+ years old of movies and TV shows)
200 CD Jewel cases
VHS Player and Capturing devices
100 blank cd spindle
and a 19" Monitor
I have admitted to downloading copywrited material and creating video cds for a hobby. The search warrant that was issued to me was blank, just had my address and a judges signature. Was told it was only the cover sheet and they left the real warrant at the station by mistake.
From the looks of it, the raid didn't seem to change the way he thinks about warez. Read more about it from here.

So he was distributing warez or ?
Posted by: Ion Silverbolt
I would bet he did considering what he got busted with. Sounds to me like he has more money than he needs though.

Which is why OTS is totally against warez discussions in these forums, nor does it condone public posts about warez links and shit ...
This is more to avoid incriminating yourself rather than out of pure principle

Good thing I dont DL Warez... My modem is too slow for it
Posted by: Spork Lover
Better watch out folks.. they will be getting you guys with the file sharing programs next !
Posted by: SKYHN
I think im gonna quit with the filesharing accept for Mp3's. When my shared folder is 20.5 gb, thats a problem!

I don't know what the FBI's problem is. At least we don't go around trying to infiltrate people with our magic lanterns. Rude bastards..
Seriously though, all that warez busting won't help. It will just make warez traders more careful.

yeah it wont be nearly as public as it was before. If they really wanted to make an impact they should ahve waited longer, because taking 100 down out of thousands doesnt doo much. It was totally innefective. Oh well, like I said I dont do warez... I have been known to listen to mp3's...anything to worry about? I dont share em

I dont allow my files to be shared either.
I bet that the U.S. Govt will soon have a "Tech" enforcement branch or something(If they dont already have one) that is like the D.E.A.
Call it:
W.P.D.E. = Warez Possesion & Distribution Enforcement

I'm a system admin for my local sheriff's office. We have a detective here who's official title is Computer Forensics.
He's the guy that will get to go through your computer looking for your kiddy pr0n and warez. I've seen some pretty interesting things in his office.

I don't see anything wrong with busting the major sites, but when they start hitting small users homes we are going to have a problem. The government is losing a ton on internet communications, and it's no doubt that they want in.
I can see digital ID cards being a requirement for every computer on the net in the US soon. If that happens, there's no limit to what they can stop. It would be tough for the gov. to do, but I would definately not put it beyond reach.
I hope i'm totally wrong.

And it wouldn't work either. Hackers will always find a way around it. It's no different than copy protection methods or product activations. All it serves is to annoy the hell out of everyone.

I remember my last year in highschool, they were considering putting those thumbprint ID readers on all computers in the school. I actually thought that would be cool, but at the same time get more people caught doing stuff, :Cough:.

if it forces the warez morons to go less public then it is serving its purpose by making the stolen software less available. the magic lantern thing is no different than a phone tap or any other type of surveliance. it still requires a court order to conduct one and they are still covered by the same limitations of any other type of survelience. i would have a problem with stuff like that if the government police forces were using it for random unwarranted searches but they arent.
its not logical to assume that just because the crime is done on a computer that the laws should not be enforced. law enforcement is not an all or nothing affair. just because a lot of people drink and drive and there is never going to be a way to stop all of the offenders all the time, does not mean that the laws against DUI should be undone or unenforced.

This difference between this and a wiretap is, magic lantern opens the door to be abused. It would probably be very easy for hackers to modify the existing "virus" to send them the encryption certificates. It's probably why symantec refused to not detect magic lantern with their anti-virus software.
I'm not against the government busting people for computer crime, but using a virus to achieve those means is not the answer. Also, I don't see how they can legally arrest anyone by obtaining information in this manner. It's considered a malicious attack.
I don't have a problem with them busting warez sites. I mean they are opened for public access to begin with. My beef is with magic lantern.
