Who's gonna watch Lord of the Rings tomorrow?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Canis Lupus

I sure as hell am ... some early reviews said it was really kickass ... three hours long ... and contains real eye and ear candy...

Don't expect to see Tom Bombadil in it, tho ... I heard they cut him out because the movie was already too long ... well, we'll see tomorrow if this is all hype or just modest understatements...

Posted by: Bobaroo

My friend saw a special showing of it yesterday and said it was really good. i am looking foward to this movie, hopefully I will have time to see it.

Posted by: Kdr Kane

I was going to take tomorrow off for just that reason.

Too bad I have to work.

Posted by: Tweaker

Maybe this weekend I'll check it out.

But a 3 hour movie! Hmmm.. Better be good!

Posted by: Spider

Going on Friday after my brother gets home from MTU

Posted by: SKYHN

Not me.

Posted by: Null Actor

I'm probably gonna see it friday afternoon. Figure I can avoid lines and shit that way. Plus I don't want to have to buy tickets ahead of time. If it's even POSSIBLE to get tickets to see it tomorrow anymore... hehe

Posted by: Swilo

I'm waiting for more of my friends to get back from college this week, then we're all gonna drive up to Lowes and watch it on their super-giganto-ultra-magnificient big screen.
If it's good we're gonna hop around and watch it several times, if it sucks we're going to incite a riot and take the theatrre hostage.

Posted by: Xoncide

gonna see it friday

Posted by: redwench

im gonna wait til january, when all the kiddies are in school

Posted by: Bishop

Theatre that should be playing it removed tekken tag and area 51 second edition in favor of some very lame fighting game I can't remember the name of and a Revolution X clone.

Whereas last time they replaced tekken 3 and area 51 with revolution X and war gods.

I pumped at least 20$ into area 51 and 5 or 6 into tekken 3 every time I saw a movie (would arrive a hour or so before it started just for the hell of it) until the bastards removed them.

If it's still playing by chtritmass I'll definitly be seeing that or something else.

Posted by: Spork Lover

I saw LOTR before i went to work tonight...great movie.. hated the abrupt halt like in the books though...ahhh another year.

Kiddies weren't a problem at all...no one was loud, laughed at appropriate times.... Tolkien fans are quite considerate....except for the person next to me with a breathing problem....heard obnoxious nose breathing for 195mins!!!!

Posted by: Xoncide

im a kiddie

Posted by: redwench

you are indeed xon. which is why im waiting until january ^^.

Posted by: Gunslinger

It was excellent.

A few things were left out, but nothing to the detriment of the plot.

And laggy, that rumor you mentioned is correct.

It's not the book, but it's not supposed to be. Little things were gone. Stuff was skipped. One thing was changed, being Arwen, but as previously stated, it's the movie not the book. It was very nicely done, in my opinion. I wasn't disappointed at all.

Posted by: DemonBob

Kick ass!!! I saw oit last night at the late feature! Going to see it again saterday w/my dad.

Posted by: Gunslinger

Some of those combat scenes were incredible.

I also really liked the depiction of Sauron from the old war of the second age.

And Legolas. Oh man. He's a badass.

Posted by: Spider

Tom Bombadil isn't a little thing!

Oh yeah...the halflings aren't fat enough.

Posted by: Gunslinger

The plot isn't even remotely changed without Tom Bombadil. Therefor, it IS a little thing.

*wink*

Posted by: Spider

They should have had Warwick Davis be Frodo.

Posted by: uh...ok

The only gripe I have about the movie is that it was too short.

I sat there the whole time hoping that it wouldn't ever end.

And I agree with Gunny, Legolas was kickass... my fav next to Arwen.

But then again I've always been partial towards Elves in the fantasy realm...

Outta curiosity how many of you guys actually read the series? In a way I was glad to not have read it because I didn't know what to expect, and the surprises and plot twists were part of the fun. Except now I DO want to read the series because I don't want to wait til next Christmas to know what happens.

But I still like watching it without knowing what's gonna happen... ahhh!!! Maybe I'll just read Book One.

-uh...ok

Posted by: Spork Lover

Uh... yeah same here... i went in at 8:15, had to be in at work at 12.. the whole time i was like hurry up and end... when it ended the way it did, I went on the net and searched for the next release....2002 Can't wait for the next ones to come out.

I never read the books, but I have seen the animated Version, as well as the hobbit

Posted by: Gunslinger

I've read The Lord of the Rings several times. The books are great, and will always be better than the movie. However, I don't think you'll lose anything from reading the books before the next movie comes out. I wasn't disappointed with how the first one was rendered, so I doubt it will change with the next 2.

If you read the series, you're going to notice a lot of things missing. One big thing, and a lot of little things. It's not to the detriment. I would just go ahead and read them. It's a great story (I almost said series, but it's not actually a series...just one novel really). It helps to have read the Hobbit, to understand a lot of Bilbo's happenings with the ring, but it isn't entirely necessary. I didn't read The Hobbit until after I had read LOTR.

I also read the Silmarillion (very hard read - of my experience second only in difficulty to Paradise Lost by Milton). This isn't really a story, but a work of linguistics. It occurs, chronologically, way before the third age (third age is the time during LOTR). It explains a lot. How Sauron came to power. The creation of the rings. And a lot of other things that really shape all of middle earth. If you're looking for more than just an isolated story, and you want to understand Tolkien's world, then read that one too.

There's just a lot of little things that make it more than a story. I am actually considering writing my honors thesis on it (middle earth) for college (a few years away on that).

Anyway. I've blabbed a lot in this post. I like talking about things like this. It's interesting to me. You wanna converse, then PM me. =)

Posted by: Spider

The Silmarillion is the chronicle of the First Age the creation of the world and the Valar and so on ... I like it, good read, though the halflings have no involvement in it..and I don't think the reading is that hard going though Gun...heh

Posted by: Spider

I still think Warwick Davis would have been the shiznittle Frodo.

Warwick Davis hardly looks like a sad, troubled hobbit ... besides, everytime people look at him, they'll remember the "peck" in Willow ... add to the fact that they would have to look for other people his size to be hobbits ... and Elijah Wood acts better

Davis would be better off as a gnome, not a hobbit

Posted by: Ion Silverbolt

Everything that was short in Willow blew ass. From Willow's height to smaller. They all needed stepped on. Val Kilmer was the only highlight in that movie. The problem with Hollywood here is they think anything short is comic relief.

Since LOTR's is taken seriously, I already know it will be good. Can't wait to see it.

Posted by: Lord_Buttplug

Rumor has it the DVD will have about 1.5 hours more of footage and might be rated R.

Posted by: Gunslinger

Spidey - I read The Silmarillion in the 7th grade. It WAS a hard read for a 7th grader. I had just come off my first go round with LOTR, and I was expecting plot. It was hard to stay with it after coming off the war.

Anywho
the movie was sweet
My biggest beef with the movie was that the balrog under Moria was a bigger badass than Sauron (he's a balrog if you didn't know) and Sauron is supposed to be the badass (next to Melkor of course) ... I thought they made him look like a big elf-like guy, or maybe shadow kahn from mortal kombat, in any case the movie was good could have been better, but wasn't near as bad as it could have been

Posted by: Spider

Oh yeah, and the Warwick Davis thing, I was just messing around, though I did love him as The Leprechaun
Me wants me gold!

Further proof that size doesn't matter.

I actually liked the portrayal of Sauron and the Balrog. I thought it was quite appropriate. The Balrog in Moria is a huge firey badass, but Sauron is King Badass. The Balrog has the size, but Sauron has the balls - so to speak.

Oh man that portrayal of Sauron at the beginning of the movie was GREAT. What a total badass. One swipe of his hammer sends a score of men flying.

But, forget all of this. Remember the return of the King, as Gandalf and the Army of Gondor approaches the gates of Mordor? Gandalf commands the gates to open, and on the other side is Sauron's top lieutenant. Remember how Tolkien described the Lieutenant in words? DAMN I want to see that on film.

EXCELLENT movie. I grew up reading LOTR and the Hobbit (over and over and over again.. had to buy the books twice because I wore out my first copies). For me, all the artistic liscense they took (even the Arwen thing) didn't change the course of the story or my enjoyment of it. The imagery is amazing and the characters are SO true to the book.

Everyone who hasn't read these books, READ THEM (yes, it will most likely require some time away from the computer screen). My friend is making his 8-year-old daughter read them before she can see the movies.

Posted by: Scav

yer friend is psychotic

Posted by: Darky!

I'll wait for the DVD.

Posted by: ashw

im gonna go see it in about a week when i can get free passes

Posted by: Darky!

Acctually, second though, ill go see it christmas day! Since i just learned a few hours ago my parents, grandparent, yada yada, all the old people, aren't getting together this year. To many people died and such. Everyone just wants some piece and quite this year. I'll just cook for my parents christmas eve, and go see a movie christmas day... and maybe stop by babbages (yes! there open!) and pick up some christmas goodies (The kind that are from me, to me)

Posted by: ashw

my family aint getting together this year either since my g'ma died earlier this year.

Posted by: Gerbilo

i saw it last night(good thing it was the 10:30 show not the 11:45 otherwise i wouldn't have made it home till sunrise lol) it was pretty good. Only a couple "problems" with it that didn't bother me, but might bother others. 1. very unresolved ending, but it's part of a trilogy so it is supposed to be like that. 2. someone not used to something like that might be confused a lot, with dwarves and elves all that,... once again, i could understand that, but others might not.

I thought it was cool, one thing i noticed was, during the movie i kept thinking about StarWars.... did anyone else do this? hehe oh yeah, the big firey dude in the moria caves reminded me a lot of Diablo hehe

Posted by: uh...ok

I had whispered to my sister as we watched the Moria scene that the balrog looks like Diablo...

By the way, not that it's too big a deal, but in Gunny's post he mentioned something that happened later in the series... could you please, at the top of your post, note that there's a spoiler in it so those of us who don't want to know what happens will be able to skip over it? Thanks.

-uh...ok

Posted by: Gunslinger

That was in no way anything that comes even to close to resembling something that might be a spoiler if you are as blind as a bat and you squint.

Posted by: uh...ok

Gunny well... you mentioned Gandalf.

I'll say nothing further.

-uh...ok

Posted by: Gunslinger

In regards to that - if you had only read the first book as opposed to watching the first movie - that might be considered a spoiler.

The movie answers it - though.

Posted by: Gunslinger

And - I like to - use dashes in all - my - written communication - as you - can see.....

Posted by: uh...ok

*not getting it*

Anyhow, it was just a request, out of courtesy for those who either haven't watched it yet or don't know what will happen. You can choose to acknowledge or ignore it. *shrug*

***possible spoiler have someone else you dont like read this first then tell you if it can be considered a spoiler***

in response to gerb, i know those issues you brought up dont bother you, but i dont think the last one should be considered an issue about people possibly not getting the elves and the dwarves.

Im tired of movies that cater to the stupidest person alive. If your going to watch a movie called Lord of The Rings or any other movie based off something else, i feel that the director or writer or whoever cheats the audience if he goes into detail and explains things that would be common sense to a true fan so that anyone can enjoy the movie. When i go see a movie I want to be entertained, I dont give a damn if my little brother can understand it.

Now im not a hardcore fan but I understood the elves were light people with pointy ears and magical and wise and long living and the dwarves were fat little people with beards and slobs and strong and carried axes and lived in tunnels and the two parties hated each other.

(heres the spoiler)

I really enjoyed the way the movie opened up pretty much straight into telling how each faction had so many rings and that the 3 armiers, dwarf, elf, and human had united to fight the evil sauran. It made me feel smart and part of the story.

The books are tired and boring.

I liked the movie overall, but the books put me to sleep. Tired, old, overused.

Doesn't matter if Tolkien came first, fact of the matter is if they weren't the first thing you read, they are going to be a pretty boring read.

It's not a subtle point you're making.

Posted by: JeraalMordeth

Ok, this is for someone who has read the Silmarillion...

How can Sauron be a balrog, as Spider suggested? Does the Simarillion specificly say that?... or imply it?

The balrog in Moria matched Gandalf (actually they kill one another I think...), even though Gandalf was then the second most powerful Wizard in Middle Earth, was armed with Glamdring, and the bearer of one of the Three Rings.

It stands to my reason that if a balrog armed with just a whip and a sword can match all that, then a Sauron-balrog armed with the One Ring, controlling the Nine and commanding an army of hundreds of thousands of Orcs, would be invincible...To further complicate matters, true Wizards (i.e. Gandalf, Saruman, Radagast, etc.) were NOT present in Middle Earth at the War of the Elves and Sauron, so the Elves had only rudimentary knowledge of magic.

Next, the time line specificly says Sauron was captured by the Numenorians and taken prisoner there, where he eventually "seduces" the king. Seducing doesn't seem like something a balrog would be capable of doing since it is unlikely that anyone is going to sit around and listen to it instead of running their ass off....

Can someone enlighten me here...I am goignt o get that book soon anyway just to read it for my self...

Posted by: Gunslinger

Just read it.

Honestly, I don't ever remember Sauron being called a Balrog, but it's been a long time since I picked up that book.

I suppose it can be said, that Sauron (assuming he's a balrog) doesn't have to share the appearance of the balrog in Moria.

Who knows?

I don't think you can take the word seduce in a sexual context - if that is what is confusing you. It probably means he tempted the king with something.

No amount of explanation here will help you much though. Just churn your way through The Silmarillion. I may go back to that when I finish reading LOTR again.

Posted by: JeraalMordeth

Oh, yeah...

I just re-read the part of The Two Towers where Gandalf talks about how he beat the Balrog, and how each person/thing is "dangerous" in it's own way...

Here I quote him, except that I capitalize what I consider the most important thing in this context.

Gandalf (to Gimli):

"Dangerous! And so am I, very dangerous: more dangerous than ANYTHING you will ever meet, unless you are brought alive before the seat of the Dark Lord."

Again I could be wrong, but this seems to imply that Sauron is dangerous because of who he is and what he knows, not what race he is...

Also I am quick to point out that "Dangerous" is not neccessarily equivalent with powerful, even in this context. Example: A stray Terrier(sp?) with rabies may be more dangerous than a tame Dobberman that has all its shots...(maybe an exageration, but you get the idea.)

Posted by: Spider

Sauron is(was) a maia a lesser valar, melkor seduced him to his service and power sauron become the most powerful of his balrogs (his generals basically) blah blah blah read Quenta Silmarillion

I hope in the other LotR movies they make it clear that the Wise (Saruman, Gandalf, Radagast, etc) are not humans or elves.

Posted by: Nfested

I never read the books, but I saw the movie and it was awesome. I hated how the movie ended so oddly making you want to watch the next one. The fighting scenes were nice (except for the underground Diablo look-alike that used a whip when he could've used his fists). But I liked this movie better than Gladiator and Gladiator is one of my favorite movies. Next Christmas is so far off!

I want to read the books to find out what happens but I don't because then the movies won't be anything new to me.

Posted by: Bobaroo

I still haven't seen it yet. i really want but just haven't gone. Everyone says how good it is and it makes me want to read the books and see the movie.

Anakin Skywalker was seduced by the Dark Side ... so there

Some people enjoy a little more than shoot-em up games.

The movie is a work of art.

Don't I wish! Maybe they already have some finished reels of Tom Bombadil and flying Nazguls ... a 4 1/2 hour movie like FOTR would be a treat on DVD!

Saw it. Loved it. Went in saying "3 HOURS?!" and stocked up on drinks and snacks.. movie started.. movie ended.. in my mind I was shouting "NOOOooo! You *can't* stop there!" (and yes, I am very familiar with the books, and knew where the movie would end before I saw it).. drinks and snacks were untouched.. and the Crew (we went as a family - all 11 of us took up the entire front middle of the theater hee hee) were all looking at watches in disbelief.. and then asking if we had time to see it again

This is a film, not the book - and as a film it WORKS.

Posted by: Ion Silverbolt

The fact that this movie is 3 hours long and doesn't feel like it is a good indication that it's a good movie.

I bet the next one is even better when we get to see those massive orc battles.

Schindler's List was en equally long movie that won Academy Awards ... so I think "length" is irrelevant to whether a movie is good or not ...

Posted by: The Bear Man

I seen the movie on Christmas day. I thought it was really good, but I know its hard to put such a great book into 3 hrs. But I think they did a good job. I have the cartoon of the movie, so I kindy knew what to expect. I cannot wait for the Return of the King, thats my favorite one. (hehe I liked the Balrog the best). Off the subject for a second, I saw a poster of the next coming movie of Star Wars. Has anyone else seen this?

Posted by: The Bear Man

On the subject of Balrogs and Sauron: I read in a study book of Middle Earth one time that Sauron was a lieutenant to Melkor, and the Balrogs, were servents to Melkor. Melkor actually created the Balrogs for his "pets" according to this book.

I was referring to the feel of the movie. Movie critics are dumb and never pick movies out of pure entertainment value. The movie didn't feel like 3 hours to me because I enjoyed it. Unlike the Phantom Menace which sucked until the Light Sabre Duel.

Nope.
The Balrogs are "tainted" Maia.

Well, I think winning academy awards is irrelevant to whether a movie is good or not.

anyways, if you liked Lord of the Rings, I sugest you go to your local video store and rent a little movie called "Bad Taste" (yes its real). The movie was directed by the very same man who directed Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson. Bad Taste is regarded as one of the most violent movies ever (right next to Dead Alive) and it is quite hillarious to watch. There is a scene near the beginning where a man's head is literally sawed in half (and you get to see all of it). Its quite a choice shot. I highly reccomend this movie to all that loved Lord of the Rings. Look for it in the horror, cult classics, or comedy section.
