The Redmond, Wash.-based software giant filed a motion with the U.S. Court for the Western District of Washington against Lindows, which is developing a version of the Linux operating system that will run popular applications written for Microsoft's Windows OS.
Microsoft contends the company, which plans to formally release its product next year, purposely is trying to confuse Lindows with Windows. The suit asks the court to order the start-up to stop using the Lindows name and also seeks unspecified monetary damages.

Sounds like a freeware version of MAC OSX that is Win32 compatible.

I personally think it is worth taking this all the way to court and then simply changing the name slightly. This is the best and cheapest advertising that Lindows.com could hope for. They might spend $1 million on lawyer fees but it would take them $20 million in advertising fees to get this much exposure.
MS is definitely afraid of something like this and they were just not thinking when they brought the lawsuit because it is fueling the fire.
If they did not have competing products, I would say that Lindows would be a clear winner here but because of the similar market space, there could be a problem. I say *could*. Microsoft has used many similar names to other projects out there and even stolen some (DNS, etc.) and given them completely different uses. The outcome should prove to be most interesting for both sides.

You would have to be pretty deaf or stupid to confuse Lindows with Windows. Its about time MS sues another company or person, they need the money...

Microsoft would be smarter to help Lindows, cause then MS can start marketing their software against linux as well.
A nice back door to infiltrating linux.

Somehow, I just don't see linux being any sort of threat to MS. Lets face it, only a small percentage of hard core tech geeks use and love linux. To the majority, it is too technical, and difficult to get that loving piece of hardware to work with it because drivers are being fermented in someone’s basement through the process of trial by fire. If I was MS, I would not sweat about Linux. It just isn't ready to go big time, and maybe never will.
I will take a wait and see approach to Lindows. Personally, I will never use linux, and as such..don't see a need for Lindows. But who knows, could be big.
As for the name...yep...it could be confusing to the average windows user. It even sounds the same when spoken out loud. Personally, I hope Lindows beats it and changes their name because Lindows sounds lame. Just my opinions...mind you.

Maybe to the average 12:00 flasher...

Ha!
But the catch is, 95% of windows users are 12:00 flashers.

come on, most of us here use windows. and i like to think im not so bad as that.

No, but we are a very VERY small percentage of the total computer users out there.

Its sad, and probably most likely that lindows will not put a dent into MS monopoly over home user computers.
Im pretty excited about the idea though.. its a great idea and a good first step towards trying to make linux compete with windows.
When reading Ion Silverbolts mandrake thread i noticed that someone(err dont feel like searching) said they would love to use linux all the time, but they cant play their games on it. Well sounds like we have an answer to that problem.
This linux and windows based programs compatible with one OS is a great incentive for a user to move away from the windows monopoly.. I myself dont beleive that this one OS will do it, but it sure is a great first step.
Isnt the makers of the mandrake distribution trying to acheive this as well? maybe the two need to combine their efforts..
