Remember that BB I was talking about?

Well now's the time I actually want to get it running. But I still have a few last-minute questions.

First, using Debian's apt feature, I've been able to download and install apache, php4, php4-mysql, mysql-server and mysql-client. Although I have these installed, they have not been configured or set up yet. Before I plunge headlong into the actualy BB scripts, would I need to configure these first?

Second one is directed towards anyone who's had experience with phpbb and vBulletin (Laggy I'm looking at your general direction here). I'm still concerned about getting phpbb working only to have to switch to vBulletin later on... how important is it to start off with vBulletin, or would the adjustment from one to the other be relatively painless?

Thanks.

The default values should work, especially if it's not gonna be an overly busy forum ... make sure you installed gzip compression to save bandwidth, as well as mod_zip, mod_rewrite and other optional modules.

As for the second question, you have to decide first on whether you want to run phpBB or vBulletin. Personally I'd recommend vBulletin since it's really the more superior BB script, altho phpBB is much faster.

You can download vBulletin Lite and see if it works on your server. If it does, then you're ready to use vBulletin full version. If you're setting up a fairly small community, and you think it is still a trial stage, just purchase a leased version of VB for $85 ... the owned version is $160.

the question is, are you willing to put down the money for a vB?

phpBB has a good library of hacks available that can give you most of the functionality of a vB. Also, the phpBB development crew is in the final stages of releasing phpBB2, which is a flying leap over the capabilities of the phpBB.

In regards to switching later, if you want to switch to a vB after a while, there might be a script or feature for the vB that allows you to convert your existing pbpBB or pbpBB2 db into a vB db, though you're better off talking to laggy about that.

Also, it comes down to a matter of necesity. Is the site you're setting up really worth putting down the money for a vB, or wil a phpBB or phpBB2 suffice? Keep in mind, if you order a vB lisence and the community goes belly up, you can always pull the vB and use it later in another website (though only one site at a time).

Grrr I KNOW I have php4 and php4-mysql installed, but for some reason my browser won't run php scripts! Does anyone know what I can do to fix this?
