Christmas=Xpack

Got the xpack for Christmas like I said! I was playing act 5 and all seemed well until the end. When I was fighting in the worldstone keep the game would freeze for a few seconds then resume like nothing had happend. The music would keep going while it was frozen. When I killed Baal and tried to go into the portal Tyrial opend the game dissapeared and I got an error message and it asked me if I wanted to ignor it (this was a few days ago, I don't remember what it said exactly) and the computer froze. When I restarted and open the game again I didn't have the last cinimatics which I was really looking forward to! I killed Baal again, but alas no Tyrial, no red portal, and no new cinimatics.
I asked my cousin about it and he said he had the same problem once. Could this be a once only error?

When you're almost at Baal's lair, you have to kill the army he spawns first. When he spawns Lister the Tormentor (+army), the game freezes for just a little while so that may have been what you saw.
You will see the cinematic again when you beat Baal on nightmare and hell difficulty, and of course you can always select it on the main screen, in the cinematics section

It froze more than once durring the game. I did this in nightmare difficulty because I thought normal would be too easy and I wanted a little challenge the first time I played it. I went to the cinematics list and the last one was not there. I will try it again in normal difficulty, but shouldn't it open the portal every time I kill Baal?

I think Tyrael only opens the portal the first time but I'm not really sure, I usually don't stay around too long when Baal's dead...
Does it still freeze now when you're playing act5?
And is this an open or a realm char?

Open, and not on b.net. I am not at home now and havn't been for a few days so I didn't get a chance to play much. When I killed Baal again I think it was still freezing up, but not as bad as the first time.

I typically play realm and no, you do not get a portal every time. Only once per difficulty level. I have dusted him off about a dozen times in nightmare.
I have had one lockup after killing Lister. I believe that it was the first time in also. I was po'd as I thought I had bought another piece of junk.
There always is a slight pause upon spawning a new army. Watch out, Lister and his bunch can kill you during that pause. I tend to lure out of the room the last of each army to avoid the loading death. Now if I could just get my barb out of Act II Hell.

Why doesn't the portal open every time you kill Baal?
I would freeze randomly, not just when Baal was makeing the next army to kill me. I even freezed when I was fighting him. It's hard to play like that.

Maybe your pc isn't fast enough. Those big monsters make the game go slower or even stop if your system can't keep up.

Well this doesn't really solve your problem, but I know a way you could see the cinematic...
Post your system specs and see if you can reproduce the error, then we can help better.

I'm not sure if it's because my computer isn't fast enough, because it has never done it before. Question, if you have more ram does your computer run faster?
Posted by: Indira
PROCESSOR: Pentium III ~631MHz (L1 cash: 32.0 Kb, L2 cash: 128.0 Kb)
MEMORY: 62 Mb (63 944 Kb)
VIDIO CARD: Intel(r) 82810 Graphics Controller
SOUND CARD: Blank Space? What's up with that?
OPERATING SYSTEM: Microsoft Windows ME U.S. English 4.90 (build 3000 )
I'm not at home right now, so that is all I can really tell you

It probably happens because you only have 64mb ram, even though the Diablo2 expansion box says you can play it with 64mb of ram, I wouldn't recommend it, it starts to run smooth with at least 128mb. 256 (or more) is even better but you probably won't notice a difference anymore when going above 256.
That integrated video card doesn't make it faster either, the best choice for this game would be a voodoo card but if you don't have one, don't buy one, the best choice for all other games is still a GeForce2 mx or higher.

I don't really know much about this stuff. Can you add more ram to your computer?
Posted by: Tecil
Yes you can. With that PIII you will need a stick of PC133 which you can get for very cheap right now. Try www.crucial.com or I recommend www.tcwo.com
You can get a 256MB stick of PC133 for $40 plus shipping right now, which is pretty cheap.

Or a 128MB for $24 plus shipping.

And you can put it into the computer yourself? I've never really done any of this so I need to know all I can
Posted by: Swilo
It's all the fault of that built in video card. The way it works is by sucking up 8 megs of your memory, thus leaving you with 54, below the minimum for Diablo 2. It would run on 54 if you had a real vid card though.
If you don't know how to put the RAM in, I wouldn't advise it. Take it to a local computer store and have them either show you how to do it or have them do it themselves, do NOT break your computer for one game because of pride.
I know there are guides online somewhere that can show you how, but the best way to learn is to watch someone else do it.

You really can do it yourself, but WARNING: opening your computer's case will void the warranty on just about all store-bought computers. This means if you happen to break your computer (which is possible but not likely) while installing the new RAM, you're pretty much screwed.
If you (or your parents) are not comfortable with this, then you can buy the RAM and then take the RAM and your computer to a computer store and ask them to install it for you. Unfortunately, this can be expensive.
If you want to do it yourself and you're not familiar with the inside of your computer, then I would recommend reading Canis Lupis' guide to building a PC, especially this page: http://www.opentechsupport.net/guid...ing/page4.shtml
Your computer will look a bit different inside (more cables, wires, etc.) but the idea of slotting the RAM is basically the same. Find the old RAM, pop it out, pop in the new RAM.
In the grand scheme of things, switching out RAM is one of the simplest things you can do inside your computer. But then again, the first time you open the case and start playing around, it's still a bit scary! My advice: if you're going to do it yourself, PLEASE find a knowledgeable friend to stand over your shoulder and walk you through it!

I heard about some kid at my school that stole ram from the school computers. He got in some big trouble.

Adding ram won't help with the pauses.
I get those pauses too, especially in baal's room, even with 512 megs of ram and a 1400mhz athlon.
It's just bad programming on blizzards part. They could probably patch the pause out if they weren't a bunch of lazy bastards.

I have 512 MB PC2100 DDR and a 1400MHz TBird on an Asus A7M266 AND a Voodoo3 3000 PCI (the 3rd best card after Voodoo5 and Voodoo3 3000 AGP for playing Diablo 2) and it still takes my computer about 30 seconds to load up Lister and his cronies, but all the rest are only 1 or 2 seconds.
But this isn't her problem from what I gather. She mentioned the Worldstone chamber and killing Baal which means all Baal's minions had been killed and she was already down there.
Posted by: Null Actor
That part slowed down for me too, because it had to load animations off the harddrive or cd.
Posted by: Swilo
But in the middle of the fight? At the beginning is understandable, and I slow when the tentacles first load, but my impression was constant stuttering.
Posted by: Indira
It started when I got to the area where you kill his minions (what is that called again?) and contunued into the worldstone keep and even after I had killed Baal. After that the portal had an error and froze my computer. I restarted and went back and it was still freezing, just not as bad.

Do you mean the game freezes for 30 seconds?
If it does than something's wrong, I got about the same comp as you and it takes me about 1-5 secs for them to load.
