Best of 2001 PC Games

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Really it's been a slow year as far as PC Games go, but there were a few good games to come out. And some sites already have their top picks out. Here's the links:

- GameSpot's Best and Worst PC Games of 2001
- Gamespy's best of 2001 PC Games
- Voodoo Extreme's Best of 2001
- GamePC Best of 2001

As for me, i'm glad it's over. The game list for PC games in 2002 look a lot more refreshing.

hehe, GamePC's most overrated product of 2001 was the PEntium 4.

I found GameSpot's review of Shattered Galaxy quite interesting. It won awards for Most Innovative and Best Multiplayer Strategy Game

System Requirements:
-Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, or ME
-Intel Pentium II 233MHz OR AMD-K6 400MHz (Intel Pentium III OR AMD Athlon or Duron recommended)
-64 MB RAM (128 MB RAM recommended)
-28.800 Modem (56K Modem, ISDN, Cable Modem, DSL recommended)
-2 MB Video RAM, 16-bit color (8 MB video RAM recommended)
-250 MB free hard disk space (600 MB free hard disk space recommended)
-4x CD-ROM
-DirextX and compatible sound card

Charges:
If you purchase the game from a store, you get a free month online. The monthly charge is $9.95. For a limited time, you can purchase a one year subscription (13 months with the free month) for $59.95.

You can download (120 MB) the game for free and try it for 14 days. The cinematics download is 170 MB. In this case, it will cost you $14.95 to activate your account for full operation and the monthly/yearly charges will apply also.

I haven't tried it yet. Maybe when I get some time.

Looking at it some more, I'm not sure they really have a player base.

You know it's been a thoroughly shitty year for PC games when every site picks different winners.

When it's been a good year for PC gaming, you can tell, because most places pick common winners.

On the contrary, I find it refreshing that the opinions on what makes a game great are diverse, unpredictable and not too universal The top picks are, after all, based on the reviewers' opinions and not on a specific "rule" on what makes a game great

If places pick a common winner, you know it's a BAD year, because there are only one or two games that reviewers considered "good", thus ignoring the other games that they deem to be "bad" in comparison. If there were a lot of good games, then reviewers will have a hard time picking a "top" game, and it is inevitable that they will have different choices for the best game of the year.

Which is why I never really put too much trust on game reviews from so-called "top game sites" in general until I have tried the said games myself

Reviewing games is like reviewing movies or books - it only shows what the reviewer's opinion is about it, not a definitive proof that it is indeed "good"

hmmm i woulda said a tie between DDR ram for motherboards and any cpu over 1000mhz and toss in windows XP as a runnerup for most overated. nothing in the PC world since the release of the AMD K7 and P3 at 1000 mhz has really been innovative

as for most inovative product thats easy Xbox.
